Windows 7 update not working

I have tried all the solutions on the forum but i still have the problem of windows 7 update not working.My computer has been shutdown for 6 weeks as i have been  away. On startup yesterday th probleme  started.

Go into Control Panel >> click on Windows Update item

Click on Change settings (at top left)

under Important updates, click on the down-arrow pull-down

Click on Never check for updates

press OK

Close the Control Panel window

Then Logoff and restart Windows fresh.

When ready, go back into Control Panel >> click on Windows Update item

Click on Change settings (at top left)

under Important updates, click on the down-arrow pull-down

Now make the selection that you need for automatic updates

press OK when done

Close the Control Panel window

Next, do a fresh visit to Windows Update. Kindly advise on results.

If this solves the original issue, kindly click on the MARK It (green) icon.

If this has helped, click on the green Yes  (Helpful) icon as appropos

    Maurice, this solution did not work for me. I actually do not receive any error messages, only "installs failed". I have a Sony Vaio with Windows 7 Home version.  Any other possible solutions. I've run the diagnostic "fix it" wizard several times as well. Will get "problem fixed", then upon restart, get the "updates failed reverting to last restore point".

    NOTE: changing the update frequency to the Never Check for updates will cause the update to begin a few seconds later. No need to reboot. At least that was my experience. Just remember to go back and change your update frequency preference. If like me and several others you have not received an update since April 2012, it will take about an hour to run the update.

    Just wanted to say thank you very much. I discovered that I was not receiving updates during a routine scan by Webroot - my favorite security software package. I had not received an update since APRIL 2012!!! Google offered a link to the MS support page first - something called FixIt. So I tried it. It detected the problem but could not fix it! Great - a catch 22. It kept telling me to restart but did not mention the need to toggle the settings. The link to this page turned up in second place. Of course it should be first.  It turns out that just by turning the scheduled updates setting to NEVER, the system was able to reset itself and updated the Windows Update module. Then it proceeded to load and install 67 more updates! One hour later, I am back to normal. In this scenario, it is important to remember to go back and change your update schedule preference if you want auto update to be active.

    Thank you again. I hope that MS will hire you since they clearly need some good people or at least fix the information it provides with the FixIt page.
