Call of duty 4 crashes in Windows 8.

My COD4PC has stopped working once upgraded to Windows 8, the error I am receiving is caused by a Punk buster malfuction, caused by a faulty module named "PBCL.DLL" in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Call of Duty 4\pb" folder, playing in non punkbuster servers will run fine, then when I go into PB enabled servers the game will result in a crash. *Worked fine in Windows 7.

    Hi...

    I know how frustrating it can be not being able to play an awesome game like MW 4......I've been there done that!!

    Be "more" patient....I will find a fix as I did with many of my personal games........

    • go into the game's directory and open a folder named "main"
    • right click on the video folder cut and paste it on your desktop or any safe location of your choice**.....**.run the game again!

    If it does not work, put back the video folder to it's original place!

    Gravityforce - tried your suggestions.  After making change, rebooted.  First attempt to run program, immediate game crash...iw3mp.exe stopped running error.  Rebooted.  Second attempt, game loaded, then screen went black.  No change whether I run program as Admin or not.

    Hi..

    1. click start and right click on computer and choose properties
    2. on the upper left corner of the open window click Advanced System settings
    3. on the new window click Advanced tab
    4. under performance....Visual effects"""""" click settings and choose Data Execution Prevention
    5. click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select then click Add
    6. in the new popup window click the little triangle inside the Look in Box and search for the game Application inside the game directory...for eg: iw3mp-iw3sp
    7. right click on it and click select click Apply and Ok and ok to the rest of the open windows

    Launch the game and let me know if it works!

    OR

    • open the game directory and right click on the game application
    • select properties and click on the capability tab and tick the box that says Run this program as an administrator
    • click Apply and Ok

    Launch the game and let me know if it works!

    Hi.

    Give me a little more details on what you did, which level the game crashed......if it crashes on startup......error message(s) etc...... (full error message) Tell me everything you experience with the game.........Details please!.......The more details I get the more help I can provide!!!!!

    Gravityforce - exactly what happens is this.  Does not matter what COD4 server I enter.  The game will boot without issue.  I enter the game and actually start playing.  It might last 30 seconds...it might last a minute, whatever, but the game simply either shuts down with the iw3mp.exe error OR my screen blanks out and I have to reboot.  As a matter of reference, I can be using one of the Win8 apps...weather...news...etc. and they will crash going to the blank screen, causing a need to reboot.  Other newer games that my son plays, FireFall, League of Legends, also crash to a blank screen.  My computer was completely stable under Vista, any game any other program.  I can run the COD4 on Win7, no issue.  The only thing that has changed is that I mistakenly downgraded to Win8.  It is the most unstable OS I have EVER encountered.

    There is no way I can believe that this is a COD4 or PB issue.  Again, COD4 runs under the other versions of Windows.  PB would kick you with a PB error if it screwed up.  It simply is a Win8 OS issue.  I wish I was techie enough to go deeper than that.  If I could get the option from MS to go back to my old OS, I would take it in a heartbeat.  I have rebooted my computer more in the last month since downgrading than I have booted the computer in its entire 3 year life.  Ridiculous.
