How do I resolve error 651 on a new Windows 8 installation?

I installed Windows 8 Pro on a Zotac Zbox AD03 3 days ago. The installation went fine and everything, including the network and internet, worked just fine. The network contains 4 Windows 7 machines, a network printer, a Buffalo NAS, a Windows Home Server, a 16 port switch and a Motorola combo cable modem (DOCSIS 3.0) and router. The new computer with Windows 8 could see everything and appeared to function perfectly with normal internet access. After powering it off for the night I restarted it the next morning and found it could only see the Windows Home Server and one of the Windows 7 machines. It reported that it was not attached to a network and when I tried to connect I got error 651. I did a complete new install and it still could only see the Windows Home Server and the same other Windows 7 machine and still get the error 651 message. What could have happened during that power down/restart to cause it to lose network connectivity? How do I fix it?

    Hi Sondra

    Not sure if my problem was as severe as yours but I ran registry clean up in Norton 360 and that cured my problem. If you have not got Norton 360 registry clean up is available on other anti virus suite software

    for all - it did worked for me on LAN

    1. right click on Network
    2. left click on Properties
    3. left click on Change adapter settings
    4. you will see a BroadBand Connection (WAN Miniport (PPPOE)), right click on that
    5. left click on Connect/Disconnect
    6. type in username and password as provided
    7. hit ENTER

    I am trying to setup a new wired connection on my PC (Windows 8, 32-bit OS, based on 64-bit processor, 2.8 GHz, 1.00 Gb RAM). I have wired it to a Huawei Router (model HG658), intended to create a new connection, but the same error message is displayed. I uninstalled my Bitdefender Total Security 2013 from the PC, following your advices, but, after intending to set a new connection again the setup process failed again, providing the same error message. I have also intended to Restart the PC in Safe Mode with networking, but, when trying to setup the connection again, the error code 751 appears. 

    I previously had the PC connected to a similar model of a Huawei wireless Router, but this is the first time when this issue occurs.

    Is there a dedicated Windows Update that could fix this issue?

    I've had my PC w/Windows 8 since 12/12 & recently experienced a limited connectivity issue & i am wired in directly & found error code 651 also & don't know how to fix it since HP didn't send a disc along w/the PC...so what now. Trying  "Refresh your PC w/o effecting any files" but it's taking forever & will this fix it?

    I got my computer at the same time as you got yours. I had no bother until I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and sometime after that I got the 651 error code. I tried most suggested things but they did not work. I found the problem was to do with disk optimization on the SSD and Norton 360 was coming up with an error. I had to go through Norton trouble shooting which meant a new install. After the new install I ran from within Norton the registry clean up and the problem disappeared and has not appeared again.

    If you are using Norton you could try what I did. Hope it sorts the annoying problem out. Not that it matters but my laptop was a Sony Ultrabook.
