How to install vcdrom.exe and the sys file.

i installed vcdrom.exe and copied vcdrom.sys to windows/system32/drivers like instructed, but when i try to select vcdrom.sys in the install driver list it's not even visible. but when i go to said location ouside the program i find it no problem, i tried running the program as admin, i tried setting the sys file to full control and it makes no difference. what should i do?

There is actually an updated version that's supposed to work with Win7

Right-clicking the vcdcontrolTool.exe file and choosing Run as administrator eliminates the "Cannot Open SCM: Access is denied" message, but VCdRom.sys is still not visible in %windir%\system32.

Apparently it's just not compatible with x64 versions... even if you run it elevated and try to load the copy of the driver file left in the unzip subdir (which is found with no problem), the message "Driver has been blocked from loading." results. Possibly whatever MVP re/wrote it either forgot about kernel mode code signing or doesn't want to pay the ($400?) annual fee to MS for signing x64 drivers.

    I would suggest you to create a new thread, so that we could focus on this issue separate and work together to resolve this issue.

    In the new thread, please provide us the make and model number of the computer and the error message that you receive.

    We will be happy to assist you with any issue with Windows Operating System.

    If you don't understand the issue (VCDControlTool not working on Windows 7 64-bit), please allow someone familiar with the issue to participate in the thread.

    I would speculate that it will never be fixed.  They will ignore it for another year or two, then announce that support is being dropped, so you will have to cough up a few hundred for the next version.

    And they probably won't support it there either.

    The amazing thing is:  All that is needed is to get the sys file signed.  But they won't do it.

    So far, I am still at exactly 0.000% problems solved by the MS forum.  An amazing accomplishment.

    Have you thought about installing it with the signing requirement disabled, and then signing the installed .sys file yourself following the directions at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/dn170454(v=vs.85).aspx so it will load properly at boot time (when its signed status will be checked) ?

    Just wondered.  :)

    Sure... I've used SlySoft's Virtual CloneDrive for a few years now... virtual cdrom was pretty lightweight, though.
