How to install vcdrom.exe and the sys file.

i installed vcdrom.exe and copied vcdrom.sys to windows/system32/drivers like instructed, but when i try to select vcdrom.sys in the install driver list it's not even visible. but when i go to said location ouside the program i find it no problem, i tried running the program as admin, i tried setting the sys file to full control and it makes no difference. what should i do?

There is actually an updated version that's supposed to work with Win7

Right-clicking the vcdcontrolTool.exe file and choosing Run as administrator eliminates the "Cannot Open SCM: Access is denied" message, but VCdRom.sys is still not visible in %windir%\system32.

Apparently it's just not compatible with x64 versions... even if you run it elevated and try to load the copy of the driver file left in the unzip subdir (which is found with no problem), the message "Driver has been blocked from loading." results. Possibly whatever MVP re/wrote it either forgot about kernel mode code signing or doesn't want to pay the ($400?) annual fee to MS for signing x64 drivers.

    the program is actually called vcdcontroltool and it was created by microsoft. Here is the instructions included in the readme:

    1. Copy VCdRom.sys to your %systemroot%\system32\drivers folder.
    2. Execute VCdControlTool.exe
    3. Click "Driver control"
    4. If the "Install Driver" button is available, click it. Navigate to the %systemroot%\system32\drivers folder, select VCdRom.sys, and click Open.
    5. Click "Start"
    6. Click OK
    7. Click "Add Drive" to add a drive to the drive list. Ensure that the drive added is not a local drive. If it is, continue to click "Add Drive" until an unused drive letter is available.
    8. Select an unused drive letter from the drive list and click "Mount".
    9. Navigate to the image file, select it, and click "OK". UNC naming conventions should not be used, however mapped network drives should be OK.

    You may now use the drive letter as if it were a local CD-ROM device. When you are finished you may unmount, stop, and remove the driver from memory using the driver control.

    when i get to step 3 a message pops up and says: Cannot Open SCM: Access is denied.

    I click ok and do step 4, after i click install driver a window opens for me to select which driver and i go to windows/system32/drivers and vcdrom.sys doesn't appear in there even when i select All Files in the drop menu. That is where i'm stuck. If i close the program and go to the same location thru Computer/C drive... etc etc, it's there.

    Hi,

    1.       Which program are you trying to install?

    2.       Do you get any error code or error message?

    It seems to be an issue with the setup file of the program that you are trying to install. It would be better to contact the manufacturer of the program for further assistance.
