hp wireless button changes airplane mode

I just upgraded my 64 bit HP Pavilion g7 2010 nr to windows 8. now, whenever i try to use the wireless button (Fn + F12) it changes the airplane mode instead of wifi.

ive updated my wifi card drivers (Ralink RT5390) and and the HP wireless button driver as well

i can use ethernet, but im at school and its not always easy to find a ethernet port

theres no other way to get wifi on because the troubleshooter says to "make sure the switch is turned on"

    I was given this g7 yesterday by a woman whose husband had passed away.  It is running Win10 and like the dozens of other people on this site my wireless key (f12) turns on and off airplane mode so it is not a problem with the button itself, but a problem this important for so many people on the same model suggests to me that it is a software problem.    Without wasting everyone's time, I inserted by USB wireless connector so I am on the web, but HAS ANYONE AT HP RESOLVED THIS ISSUE?  I have read dozens of comments below by people trying things, but it is Dec 30 2017 and this problem was first reported in 2012.  Does anyone have a solution or is this beautiful machine now useless to me.

    I tried this but only got 802.11b and no choice of band width.  I have the latest driver for the sound card.

    Any clues please?

    Hello,

    Follow the steps below to troubleshoot your concern:

    1. Press Windows key + X > Device Manager.
    2. Expand Network adapters.
    3. Right click on your Wireless LAN Network Adapter > Properties > Advanced tab.
    4. Select 802.11n Channel Width for 2.4GHz.
    5. Set Value to 20 MHz Only.

    Note: Once connected to the network, update your driver.

    I use window 10 and the Trouble Shooter did not fix the problem.  I can switch Airplane mode off and on OK but not WiFi?

    OK, found a work around in Windows 10!

    Insert installation media of old Windows 7.

    Wait while disc boots, when first screen comes up, press FN + F12 and Wifi Button ON (or whatever Key combination you used to use)

    Shut down Laptop, remove Win 7 installation media and boot back into Windows 10

    Click the Wifi Icon and click the Wifi Square so it turns blux

    Strange, but IT WORKS !!
