Need more accurate computer diagnostic tools to find and fix problems

Original Title: Why does nothing work?

Why are there no accurate computer diagnostic tools? OK. So I have some computer problems. It is not recognizing the sound card and several other things, six in all, yellow exclamation marks beside the DVD drive, OHCI compliant something or other, generic PnP Monitor, the processor (fer gawd's sake, how is it even working?), HD sound card and the PCA standard ISA bridge.

Oh yeah, first of all its a virus, then it is OEM software, so contact them. With all this, the last advice I can get is to reformat the drive and reload Win7, oh yes, and reload all my software, that at least two weeks work. And if that does not fix it, it is a hardware problem!! Why don't we just replace the mobo and see if that is it?

It is like having car problems and the garage says, "Oh yeah, we will just replace the motor and power train and see if that is the problem. If it is still there, it might be the chassis.".

What I want is a diagnostic tool that will examine the computer and pinpoint the problem and fix it. Is this too much to ask - Bill Gates? We have this for our cars. After all this time, it should be possible. In computer problems, there is way too much try this, try that. Time to switch to MAC... or Linux.

A good suggestion, although the computer will boot from the DVD drive to SeaTools for DOS, so ti would seem to be a functional drive. Sea Tools did not find any problems with the disk BTW. No, I think it is time to reload Windows.

Your problems are most likely the result of malware damage. We have identified two sets of damaged files but there could be others. You could try a Repair Install but a clean install would be better to ensure complete eradication of any remaining undetected malware.

A clean install involves formatting of the disk at the beginning of the installation process. Writing zeros to a drive is used to stop deleted information from being read after a disk has been formatted. You do not need to go to that extreme.

You need to plan your new installation. Do you have a disk to install the motherboard and other third party drivers? When your computer is up and running install anti-virus protection and then get updated motherboard drivers. Don't download all Windows Updates in one go. Download batches manually,. This enables you to manage the updating process and more easily handle any problems arising.

Backing up and restoring data is an easy thing to remember. Less obvious is the need to make sure you have all your favourites and web address for programmes you want to reinstall. Don't forget user names and password for sites you log into. Also make sure you have all Product keys to reactivate Windows 7 and programmes to be reinstalled.

The problem is, though, that one of the devices not working is the CD Drive. A repair would have to be done from inside Windows. That sounds like a clean install. Does the disk have to be wiped to zeros before doing that?
