How to gather Log files for Windows Live Movie Maker and Windows Live Photo Gallery

This article provides steps to gather various types of logs that are critical for investigating the corresponding errors. All the logs collected from should be zipped and uploaded via private messaging session initiated by the Support Moderators.

Sections below explain types of issues and steps on collecting needed logs.

Crashing issues (Launching, Saving, Adding and Playing video) in Windows Live Movie Maker and Windows Live Photo Gallery:

Collecting System Information:

     1. Run MSinfo32 as follows:

  • In Windows XP: Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type msinfo32 and then press Ok.
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7: Click on Start and then type msinfo32 on the Start Search box, and then press Enter.
  • In Windows 8: Type msinfo32 on the Start screen, then press Enter.

Note: It may take several seconds for this information to be collected and displayed.

     2. In the System Information window, click File and Save. Save the file to Desktop in the default format .nfo

Collecting Application Event logs:

In Windows XP:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type eventvwr and then press Ok to open the Event Viewer window.
  2. On the left pane, right-click on Application and Click Save Log File As. Save the file on the Desktop.
  3. Right-click on the Event Viewer files saved on your Desktop and click Send To, choose Compressed (zipped) folder.

Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8:

  1. Click Start, type eventvwr on the Start Search box (or just type eventvwr on the Start screen for Windows 8) and then press Enter to open the Event Viewer window.
  2. Double-click Windows Logs to expand the dropdown list.
  3. Right-click on Applications and click on Save All Events As... or Save Events As...Now, Save the file on the Desktop.
  4. Right-click on the Event Viewer file on the Desktop and click Send To, choose Compressed (zipped) folder.

Collecting System Event logs

In Windows XP:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type eventvwr and then press Ok to open the Event Viewer window.
  2. On the left pane, right-click on System and Click Save Log File As. Save the file on the Desktop.
  3. Right-click on the Event Viewer files saved on your Desktop and click Send To, choose Compressed (zipped) folder.

Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8:

  1. Click Start, type eventvwr on the Start Search box (or just type eventvwr on the Start screen for Windows 8) and then press Enter to open the Event Viewer window.

  1. Click Start, click Run, type dxdiag and then press Ok to open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window.
  2. Click on Save All Information on the DirectX Diagnostic window**.**Save the file on the Desktop.
  3. Right-click on the DxDiag files saved on your Desktop and click Send To, choose Compressed (zipped) folder.

Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8:

  1. Click Start, type dxdiag on the Start Search box (or just type dxdiag on the Start screen for Windows 8) and then press Enter to open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window.
  2. Click on Save All Information on the DirectX Diagnostic window**.**Save the file on the Desktop.
  3. Right-click on the DxDiag files saved on your Desktop and click Send To, choose Compressed (zipped) folder.

Collect DxDiag logs:

In Windows XP:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type dxdiag and then press Ok to open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window.
  2. Click on Save All Information on the DirectX Diagnostic window**.**Save the file on the Desktop.
  3. Right-click on the DxDiag files saved on your Desktop and click Send To, choose Compressed (zipped) folder.

Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8:

  1. Click Start, type dxdiag on the Start Search box(or just type eventvwr on the Start screen for Windows 8) and then press Enter to open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window.
  2. Click on Save All Information on the DirectX Diagnostic window**.**Save the file on the Desktop.
  3. Right-click on the DxDiag files saved on your Desktop and click Send To.., choose Compressed (zipped) folder.

Once you have the log files available, please reply back to your post and our Moderators will initiate a private session with you in order to gather the log files.
