reloaded computer- getting error message Error number: 0x80240036 for windows update. It will not run. Need to get all updates.How do I correct this?

Had same problem, this worked great for me.

  1. download windows update agent:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.4.7600.226/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

  1. open Command Prompt: type: net stop wuauserv

3. Command Prompt Type : net stop bits

4. Run windows update agent

  1. Command Prompt Type: Net Start Wuauserv
  2. Command Prompt Type: Net Start Bits

Go update Windows

I had a problem with a virus that I got on a forum, so I redid my PC with the installation disc. Searched for hours for an answer on Microsoft's website. Couldn't find anything helpful. Did a recent search on Google and found this info in a forum. Not sure why this was so hard to find an answer to on Microsoft's website. The answer is here. They updated the Windows Update Center, and now you need to download an update first. I'm on a Dell Dimension 3000 PC using XP. I used the x86 version, and everything worked again.

    And also note: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.
