reloaded computer- getting error message Error number: 0x80240036 for windows update. It will not run. Need to get all updates.How do I correct this?

Had same problem, this worked great for me.

  1. download windows update agent:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/WindowsUpdate/redist/standalone/7.4.7600.226/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

  1. open Command Prompt: type: net stop wuauserv

3. Command Prompt Type : net stop bits

4. Run windows update agent

  1. Command Prompt Type: Net Start Wuauserv
  2. Command Prompt Type: Net Start Bits

Go update Windows

I had a problem with a virus that I got on a forum, so I redid my PC with the installation disc. Searched for hours for an answer on Microsoft's website. Couldn't find anything helpful. Did a recent search on Google and found this info in a forum. Not sure why this was so hard to find an answer to on Microsoft's website. The answer is here. They updated the Windows Update Center, and now you need to download an update first. I'm on a Dell Dimension 3000 PC using XP. I used the x86 version, and everything worked again.

    I have a dell dimension tower unit with windows xp sp2.

    I have had the same error codes:

    0x80240036

    0x8024400A

    Fix it will not work for me unless i install sp3 which i cant do or .net something or other.

    I will be using windows defender and have updated Java...

    Please Help!!!!!!

    I am having the same issue after I had to format my laptop. I reinstalled Windows XP Home edition Version 2002, Service pack 2, and when I go to do updates in Windows update, I get the message: The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem. The error at first was 0x80240036, now I am getting 0x8024400A. When I try to run the fix, it says I need Service pack 3. When I try to download SP3 it tells me I need SP2. I have SP2 already and even reinstalled it. Still wont let me run the fix. I formatted this laptop a few days ago and the updates worked fine. Had to reformat and now I can not run them at all. Can you please help me fix this so that I can get my updates.

    And also note: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.
