can I use send to mail recipient with the mail app?

Send To And mailto commands only work if you have a default email client installed. The Mail App in 8|8.1|10 is not an email client. Consider Windows Live Mail, or even better, a third party email client like Thunderbird. I have been using it since going from XP to Win7 in 2009. And you had to choose a program like that with Win7 because it had no email program or client installed period.

Yet Mailto is one of the defaults set for the Mail App, as seen in the Default Programs settings.  I see that Sendto is not one of the defaults.  I sense what you are saying, that the Mail App is not a client, yet it resides in the one and only interface of the new-old Windows 10.   Fine; I would have to download a client, but that would mean admitting (while Microsoft remains silent and will not admit) that the OS is not self-sufficient (ready to work) with regard to core user operations like mailing a file straight out of an Explorer. 

Also, I was trying to avoid installing a uni-tasker like Thunderbird, particularly when Thunderbird's only use to me is to make Sendto functional.  I'm glad to have the Mail App; I'm glad that it supports multiple email accounts (including Yahoo, which forced you to pay for 'push' whatever-it's-called).  I just need that one more thing to complete the package: Sendto.

Let's get productive: Can you make Sendto call up Gmail in my browser?  I recall being able to do this in XP, unless I recall incorrectly.

Gmail used to have a trick to make it default if you installed the Google Toolbar. AFAIK, this doesn't work anymore, but Google about it.

Having to download a client may make the OS in your terms not self sufficient, but like I said, Win7 had nothing! It was download a client like Windows Live Mail or just use Webmail.

Personally, I would have rather seen them leave the app out of 8, 8.1 and 10 and leave it like Win7.

Vista had Windows Mail. The upside with that was it eliminated the problem with OE's DBX file size, but they stopped development of it in June 2006. (Yes, while Vista was still in Beta).

I don't necessarily disagree with you at all, but they will never change. And no one of any significance from Microsoft will ever see your comments here.

You don't have to like Mail App.  I'm not forcing you to.  I hope you're not forcing me to choose and like a third-party email program. Alas, I am already forced, by Microsoft.  Off the bat, you win.

All I'm asking for is that Microsoft's "Send To > Mail Recipient,' found in its very own context menu, to call up Microsoft's very own Mail App.  I would like the ability to send a file out of an Explorer when I see the file.  For now, I must open the Mail App, click through folder levels to find the desired file, and attach it.  Several clicks, compared to one.  (Same for browser-based email.)  "First-world problems?"  Probably.  But it seems easy enough for the professionals.

version of Windows), that doesn't mean it's the e-mail program you should be using."  Rather, my point is: Because an e-mail program (created by MS) comes with Windows 10 (also created by MS), I expect that it should work with the rest of the OS.  As the consumer and loyal user of Microsoft Windows, I have the right of this expectation.  As another commenter said, it is just a matter of a few lines of code.

Maybe you can help me: Is there a way to set the Send To default to go to Gmail in the web browser?  The Mail App shows that one of its defaults is "Mail To."  As far as I know, this pertains to email links found on webpages.

As it happens I agree with you. As far as I'm concerned, the e-mail
program that comes with Windows 10 is a very poor choice, and
Microsoft did a poor job creating it. However, that's beside the
point. You were here in this forum looking for help, and I offered
what I thought would be helpful advice.

But feel free to ignore my advice.
