can I use send to mail recipient with the mail app?

The "Send to" has been (and should continue to be) an integral part of the desktop interface, so your insinuation that this is an easy fix is neither appropriate nor accurate.

I'm sure it works fine on a 4" phone. Ever see Metro on a 40" screen? It's ridiculous. I downloaded Classic Shell just so I wouldn't have to deal with this awful Metro thing. I've been using Windows 8 for months and I don't even know what "Charms" are and am proud of it.

But, I digress...

The only way I've been able to get the Send To feature to work is to download a product called Affixa.

It's limited in that the best it will do is create a message in your drafts folder that you can then send on, at least that's something. If you have really deep directory structures I suppose it could save some time.

GNotifier used to do this in Win7 and earlier, but no more. Same For GAttach, which is (sadly) no longer supported.

In the end, it's all because Microsoft wants you to use them for everything...I even had to create a Microsoft account just to post the results of these mostly failed efforts to restore such a basic feature and am pissed off about that enough as it is. I hope it helps somebody!

Once you peel off the Metro nonsense, Windows 8 is in fact Microsoft's best effort to date, and by a huge margin.

And when I have a file in Windows Explorer in the desktop and want to email it? What then? Send To does not work, charms do not work ("Nothing can be shared from the desktop"... um OK?), so now you have no easy option to send anything, unless you install Windows LIve Mail or OUtlook or some other mail program like Thunderbird.

Face it, it is very very dumb that Microsoft made this oversight. You can try to talk around it all you want but it's still dumb. They could have made this work using mime type handlers. Hopefully it will be fixed in SP1.

While on the subject, Sharing in Windows 8 in general works HORRIBLY. Hardly any applications can share with eachother properly.... I have no experience with Windows phone but I hope it works better there than in Metro. It works so much better in Android.

I have the same problem. I  just want to sent to email on the desktop. I have tried innumerable different things. No luck. Unbelievable,I would not haver bought this tablet if I had known

I don't understand most of the terms and suggestions in this thread. I only know that I have two identical new computers side by side in the same room. They are set up the same with the same programs. The "Send to email recipient" command is working perfectly on one and it does not work on the other. I tried every suggestion I could find on the internet.  I subscribed to a computer service.  I have had as many as 6 professionals working on this problem for two weeks and no one has fixed it. I personally like to use the "send to" option all the time but with this new computer, it won't work. I can understand why people can get rather furious about something that won't work. The professional geeks want me to reinstall windows but that was the last straw. I can't do that because it is too much trouble for me. I am not writing this for advice because I don't think anyone has a clue.

I can send and receive email with a webbrowser.  That is all the mail app is doing.  It is not a client that has the various functions one would expect of a mail client, any more than the Surface devices and Windows phones are actually Windows computers.  They are dumbed-down devices just as is the mail app.
