    I'll work backwards:)

    The Product ID is generated during installation of the OS, using a combination of data from the Key and the hardware. A Product ID may apply to thousands of computers, while your COA Product Key can only apply to one.

    The Product Key is generated by MS - the ID is generated by your system, as a way of identifying the machine without exposing the Key to prying eyes :)

    How did your system lose activation?

    The errors in the CheckSUR log are essentially caused by registry corruption. There are a number of ways this can happen

    1. deliberate changes either by the user or with the users aid - such as a 'registry cleaner'
    2. malware
    3. accidental damage - your errors appear to be mostly in the COMPONENTS hive of the registry, and as I understand it, this is loaded at boot, and saved at shutdown. If something happens during the save  process, such as a power outage, this could cause corruption of this type. Also, disk problems could cause the file to lock at a critical point, and corrupt, or a number of other things could cause it, such as accidentally deleting the file (unlikely - I don't think there are enough errors to account for that)

    To verify your current install, visit www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate - you should be offered IE9 and MSE whan it passes.

    Feel free to post an MGADiag report, if you like.

    Running an SFC scan,and CheckSUR scan won't hurt - both should be clear.

    Good Luck with your 'new' computer!

    I got Windows reinstalled. Did a clean install. I had a few problems but got through it. I would like to close out this thread by trying to learn something from this problem.

    1)      I still don’t really understand the cause of this problem. My guess is that it was from using the Registry Cleanup with Norton 360 and Norton Utilities. I have used these programs for 20 years and have great confidence in them; hate to think they caused the problem. I did notice that upon reinstalling, Norton 360 settings had the default for Registry Cleanup as turned off. It also seems that a virus or malware could be the cause but there seemed to be no evidence of this. What do you think the probable cause was for this error?

    2)     I want to verify that I do now have Windows 7 authentication done correctly. I did go through the activation procedure. When I go to My Computer/Properties, it shows at the bottom of the screen “ Windows is activated. “  But it also shows a Product ID number that does not match with any of my computer serial or other numbers and is not the same as the Product Key number. Is this correct?

    Thanks again for your help.

    @Jeffery

    Please start a NEW qusetion of your own - this one is already complicated enough without trying to solve two entirely different problems within the same thread.
