Windows 8 Login Screen - Mouse/Keyboard Stop Working

Try rebooting after each change, especially the wireless.   Are you pulling a USB receiver to disable the mouse?   Is it in a powered USB hub?   If so, perhaps you should also try repowering that?

Yes I tried rebooting after each change as that's the obvious thing to do. No its not a hub.

Check to see if that was enough of a hardware reset to just let you continue the boot.   Otherwise what happens?

After booting into safe mode using the disc I can confirm that my PC works again how ever this does not solve the problem because in my line of work a problem is solved when you can switch it off and on as you pleased i.e. you know what caused it and how to prevent it.

I think it may help if you clarify what you are seeing as a result of your "added safe mode to the boot options so on start up every time I an choose normal mode or safe mode".   What I was expecting you would see from my suggestion was a new panel with a Change Options link at the bottom.   And from there you could choose what to do, the default being to just continue the first boot selection (e.g. the only one) normally, as if that menu had not even been shown.

What I see now is that rather than windows just booting all the way it will now stop and display like a which OS would I like to boot. With the default windows 8 and the added windows 8 safe mode.

The idea is it would clarify whether the device support was being provided by the boot manager (or UEFI) or whether the new OS would be responsible for the problem symptom.

If you read my first post I stated that I had the problem BEFORE I added safemode.

As I mentioned above, by booting into safe mode with the disc and then shutting down and rebooting the PC normally the issue appears to be gone... for now and this does not mean the problem is solved.

I appear to have inadvertently solved "my" problem. Like most reporting this issue it would happen every few days, and I'd have to boot from my repair CD.

I was given a touchscreen monitor as a present, and so I installed it. Ever since then (3 weeks now - and I use my computer 10 hours per day) I have not had a problem with the keyboard or mouse freezing ... no other changes. I'm hoping that this may point the MS techs in the right direction. The problem may have something to do with the order in which the OS interrogates the USB ports or assigns priority to said ports - I think it's switching the USB ports to "power off" and "can't wake the computer".

I think I am getting to the bottom of this... slowly.

As I said yesterday, my pc is working but the problem is not solved... well I was right as I woke this morning and problem is back. (Note I restarted the pc a few times yesterday).

So rather than put the disc in to fudge fix the problem I tried another trick... remote desktop.

When I booted into safe mode with the disc yesterday I enabled remote desktop in case the problem came back, so glad I did now.

Anyway I remote connected using my surface and went straight into Device Manager and there it was, that little yellow symbol telling me there was an issue :-)

The problem seemed to be with a Universal Serial Bus controller called

Intel(R) 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 1C26

I checked the properties and it said something like "Windows has stopped this devices as a problem was reported" or something along those lines. I did take a screenshot with the surface but for some reason it didn't save. Anyway, I tried a driver update but windows found none so I uninstalled it and rebooted. PC is working again and it looks ok in device manager, for now.

So the question is, what's causing the device to stop working?

a reply from microsoft abaout this problem is really welcoming because actualy i cant log in on my pc and i have all my work inside i have no way to get it back once i cant get in safe mode and i dont have a cd for booting it up

i tried to call microsoft yestarday but after long time trying to contact the i got some one who putted me on hold and drop the call really nice from them

no solution for this for whyle i tried every thing and no way to log on the pc because of this

Just a small update, problem just came back again. Switched PC off and removed the power cable from the back of the computer. Counted to 10, put it back in and switched it on. PC works again, not sure if it helped of if its just coincidence.
