Windows 8 Login Screen - Mouse/Keyboard Stop Working

Cheers Tom! I did this trick above and your logic behind it makes good sense! My trackpad was freezing on the desktop after a few seconds. Just started tonight. I had been using a USB mouse at work all day with this unit so USB issues sounded the culprit for sure. Good news is my keyboard was still working. I was able to delete  the mouse driver in device manager using the keyboard and then rebooted. Mouse started working again. Then i took your advice and adjusted the power settings for USB for good measure. Hope there is a patch from Microsoft coming soon for this!

I know this thread has been going on for months now, but I felt like contributing to this issue since I suffered the same faith on my home computer.

What I did (and this worked for me) is change the power settings on my USB device drivers in device manager.

Just go to device manager - Universal serial bus controllers and go to the properties of one of your "Generic USB Hub" devices.

You should have a tab called "Power Management", make sure both checkboxes are UNchecked.

This needs to be done for all USB controllers. Thank God MS provided us with Power Options in Control Panel.

Go to Control Panel - Power Options and choose "Change Plan Settings" on the plan you are currently using. Next, click the change advanced power settings link and make your way to "USB Settings" in the Advanced Settings screen.

Drop down to "USB Selective suspend setting"and make sure to DISABLE all in there.

This will automatically uncheck all checkboxes in Power Management of ALL your USB controllers.

Let me explain what this actually does.

When a USB controller receives an error from the OS, it normally shuts down. This is what is happening on Windows 8 boot. Windows somehow detects an error on the USB controllers where your mouse and keyboard are located and the ports just shut themselves. Disabling this feature like done above, makes sure the ports keep passing info to the system and hopefully keep your mouse and keyboard alive during boot :)

Tried all of the steps outlined above.  Finally turned off my machine, waited a few minutes and then restarted and it fixed the problem.  :)

How do you schedule a task when the keyboard and mouse are not being recognised ?

Diasbling the USB devices and enabling them did not work for me.

Maybe your situation is different. In my case they are in the device list but with the "alert" symbol, and disabling/enabling them solve the problem.

I first checked that connecting with a remote desktop while my pc had keyb/mouse were not working that the two peripherals were not recognized.

Here is the issue.

I upgraded a HP p7-1235 to windows 8 in december and everything worked until an automatic windows update happened on March14 2013 and since then the keyboard and mouse are not working. I called HP as my system is still under warranty and they replaced the mother board on the system. Still the issue exists. Keyboard is being detected in the bios but not after booting into windows 8 (It boots into metro screen or the home screen what ever you call it). Finally HP is saying that the issue is with WINDOWS 8. I called Microsoft and they tried telling me in different ways on how this is not a windows8 problem and I should buy a new USB device and plug my keyboard and mouse into it and blah blah blah...... It looks like I am totally screwed now as I bought the windows 8 and upgraded myself. System came with Win7 and HP is blaming it on windows 8.

The problem is not any else where.... it is in windows 8. Microsoft, please fix this issue as soon as possible. 

Update: I tried restoring to 3 of the previous restore points and it complains that it cannot restore as some thing is corrupted.
