Windows 8 Login Screen - Mouse/Keyboard Stop Working

I've tried doing Shift + F8 during boot to get to the recovery console and no luck there either.

That procedure is obsolete.   The new procedure (in the login screen) is to Tab to the Shutdown button and then press End (to get to the Restart button) and then press Shift-  (to select the hidden Advanced Restart) and then press Spacebar to action the chosen command.

However, if you have a boot selection menu you may have it easier, because there is a unobvious button (flat text) at the bottom of that screen which will get you into the Advanced Restart too.

I am having the exact same issue, I had to hard reset the pc 8 times for the keyboard and mouse to start working again.

Tried all above solutions, searched more than 20 sites, still not working...

All those guys who r also having the same KBM not working from login screen, there's on 2 options for u, either reinstall the OS (repairing doesn't work, tried my self n also searched many sites) or back to 7... As right now I'm installing win7 again....

THIS IS A REAL SERIOUS BUG WHICH COMES WITH WINDOWS 8... MS should fix it as soon as possible,,,  3 of my friends who also installed (purchased version, not pirated) r also facing damn fcking issue...... I'll now installing 7 and will install win8 after 6-7months when it will be completely fine..... This WIN8 will not do well in pc business like our old 7 did,,,, this Win8 is like Vista, sooo many issues r there...

I was using my win8 for weeks then i was playing dead island. i plugged in a microsoft brand xbox usb controller and my keyboard, mouse, and xbox controller stopped working.

they work in bios setup and in linux. Ive tried usb installer to automatically fix the system but it failed. I tried to refresh the system but the disk is locked

they seem to turn off at the login screen for no reason.

im running a i5 ivy bridge, gigabyte z77x ud3h motherboard.

there were no recent software or hardware changes.

You've reached the right forum for your question. As I understand, you cannot enter the password at the login screen. I would suggest you to follow the troubleshooting steps to check if it helps.

1. What is the make and model of the computer?
2. Did you make any changes on the computer prior to the issue?
3. Is the issue confined after upgrading to Windows 8?

You may try to boot the computer in Safe mode and check if the issue persists. Follow these steps to start the computer in safe mode.

a) Press the ‘Windows + C’ key on the keyboard.

b) Click on settings, more pc settings and then general.

c) Scroll down to advanced startup, click restart now.

d) Click on troubleshoot, advanced options, Windows Startup Settings.

e) Click restart, select safe mode and then press enter.

Note: Restart the computer to start in normal mode.
