Windows 8 Login Screen - Mouse/Keyboard Stop Working

Kb is wired, mouse is wireless. Tried removing one and then the other but no change.

Try rebooting after each change, especially the wireless.   Are you pulling a USB receiver to disable the mouse?   Is it in a powered USB hub?   If so, perhaps you should also try repowering that?

I can confirm that with the disc I can get into safe mode, so where should I start looking?

Check to see if that was enough of a hardware reset to just let you continue the boot.   Otherwise what happens?

If it is just a hardware hang I'm not sure what you would see.   Event viewer would be good for detecting crashes or perhaps other signs of driver failure.   I suppose though that you might at least be able to see if the OS had detected the failed reboot, e.g. in terms of timestamped entries which were obviously created when you had the problem symptom but not associated with what you were doing then.

I think it may help if you clarify what you are seeing as a result of your "added safe mode to the boot options so on start up every time I an choose normal mode or safe mode".   What I was expecting you would see from my suggestion was a new panel with a Change Options link at the bottom.   And from there you could choose what to do, the default being to just continue the first boot selection (e.g. the only one) normally, as if that menu had not even been shown.   The idea is it would clarify whether the device support was being provided by the boot manager (or UEFI) or whether the new OS would be responsible for the problem symptom.

Well it just so happens my win 8 disc came this morning 😊

seems to disable knock out the kb and mouse before OS select and it seems to happen (to me anyway) after approx. 3 days of using the pc.

What kind of KB?   If wireless sounds like you should try changing the batteries.   <eg>

Do you have a recovery disc?   You should be able to boot from it and then get into your safe mode boot that way.

I am too having similar issues and here is everything I have tried.

First did a fresh install of windows 8 and then made a drive image using Norton ghost - everything working fine so far.

2 days later the kb and mouse no longer work at log in so I have no choice but to restore the image. Now everything works. Install a few apps and a few days later the problem comes back again. This time around I restored the image and added safe mode to the boot options so on start up every time I an choose normal mode or safe mode.

woke this morning and pc worked fine. Come back from work, turn pc on and problem returned. Now I think ha! I have safe mode.... er no, keyboard and mouse don't work to allow me go select it and so after 10 seconds it boots to normal windows.

We are not in a bios screen. There's that screen that pops up then you press a key to log in...

That means you don't have a boot selection screen.   So try using this workaround to have one.
