My windows 8 is randomly logging off on its own, bug?

This is really frustrating. It's happened twice now, in the past 24 hours. I'm just doing my work, and suddenly the screen goes black for 2 seconds, flashing black, then goes to the 'metro' screen saver screen, where you start when you first boot the computer on. so it appears that it is logging off. I log back on, and a FEW of my open programs (skype, dropbox, few others) are still there, but most of my programs (wordpad, browser) simply terminated and I have to start them again, restore chrome session, lose work that I didn't save in WordPad, ETC.

Windows 8 Pro here.

Please help, it would be good to get to the bottom of this. 99% sure it's no virus, I'm careful and an experienced computer user and have MSE monitoring things so it can't be a virus.

    any resolution to this issue ... I've been having this since upgrading from windows 7 pro

    I'm on Windows 8.1 now. I also upgraded all possible videocard drivers (no idea if that is related). So far this issue has not occurred, so I keep my fingers crossed... It's only a few days that I'm on 8.1.

    The strange thing is, it always/mostly happened when I crossed past half of my memory total. I have 32 GB. As long as I stay below 16 GB in use, this issue seemed to stay away. I'm very curious what will happen now on 8.1.

    I was thinking it was the memory, but I switched memory already once and it had the same behavior.

    I'm glad others still seem to have this problem. As the OP, I can say that the problem still pervades my daily/weekly PC use, and it's always consistent with how and when it happens.

    I have yet to upgrade to 8.1 - it's a bit of a complicated process as I'm on a Macbook Pro with bootcamp and I have to research that particular process to make it all smooth etc. Fingers firmly crossed for that one!!! I hope to upgrade to it within the next 10 days.

    I'm still concluded from my observations that it's 'memory management', as it always happens when I've got some browser with 400 tabs or just some other combination of 'apparently too many programs' filling up the memory (yes, apparently being too much for my rMBP's 16GB of memory). Windows 7 would just crawl to a halt and I'd have to close things off and deal with the slowness myself, which is what I WANT in a power-user desktop OS environment, NOT (what I think is) dumbed-down 'look so easy, we'll handle it ALL for you' tablet design, where they just restart the OS as the 'solution' and you lose all your work and open files - down the drain.

    If others have 8.1 and have noticed the problem going away or remaining, please do chime in - I'll certainly let people know if 8.1 seems to still have the problem or not.

    I should say that I also recently updated my nVidia driver to the latest (quite an upgrade), not sure if that would help at all - I just thought since the screen goes haywire/flashing to black screen when 'it happens', maybe video card is something to do with it.....I don't think it is though, but I'm mentioning it for completeness.

    I have this issue as well on both Windows 8 and 8.1.  It is very annoying.  I've ran memtest86+ thinking it had something to do with my ram, but it came back with no errors.  I can't figure out how to stop my computer from randomly logging me out.  I could be doing anything from browsing the web with a few tabs open or playing a game.  Doesn't matter what I'm doing, it will happen.  Thought it could be an issue from overclocking but the problem still comes back at stock speeds (cpu and gpu).

    Specs if anyone wants to compare:

    i5-3570k

    sapphire vapor-x 7970 ghz ed

    8gb ddr3-1600 g.skill

    240gb g.skill phoenix III ssd

    1.5tb WD hdd

    700w antec psu

    asrock z77 extreme4

    I have also an asrock motherboard (z77 pro), all the rest is different. However with 8.1 my issues are solved (90% certain). I have been running for 3 weeks now without any problems. I opened a lot of stuff and no problems at all (22 GB ram in use atm).
