Windows Update KB2756872 kills USB ports

Hi.  I've just gone through the update to Windows 8 Pro.  I'm having a big problem with Update KB2756872.  Whenever I perform the update all my USB ports cease to work.  My motherboard is an I have an ASUS P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3.  I've updated to the latest BIOS and drivers for everything I have (except the X-Fi Titanium, which doesn't have up to date drivers).

I've gone through an exhaustive process of elimination to try and find if it's a driver problem, and it doesn't seem to be.  The problem is definitely linked to KB2756872.  Each time it installs , the USB ports stop working.  I have to force a restore to the previous restore point to get everything working again (I'm getting good at that now).

Please HELP!!!!!!!!

I fixed this dead USB ports issue on my friends PC running Win8 Pro x64 on Asus P8Z68-V Pro (Intel Z68) by going thru these following steps:

  1. During POST, open up BIOS
  2. Enter advanced mode
  3. Go to "Advanced -> "USB Configuration"
  4. Set both "USB Legacy Support" and "USB3.0 Legacy Support" to Disabled
  5. Save and exit BIOS
  6. Log on to Windows
  7. Go to "Control Panel" -> "Windows Update"
  8. Remove KB275872
  9. Reboot and open BIOS again during POST
  10. Set both "USB Legacy Support" and "USB3.0 Legacy Support" to Enabled
  11. Save and exit BIOS
  12. After logon go to "Control Panel" -> "Windows Update" and hide KB275872 which now should be in "Important updates". Keep it hidden and uninstalled until it's confirmed this issue with the update has been fixed.

These instructions might help on other motherboards/chipsets/BIOS versions aswell.

I have an asus p8p67. In my case, I can solve the problem by accessing the BIOS and telling the computer to boot from the "windows boot manager" instead of my main hard drive.

Looks like I've had the same problem and managed to resolve it.  These were my steps:

* Open Device Manager

* Expand System Devices

* Right-mouse click on the "USB Host Controller" (or device in that section with similar name).

* Select "Update Driver Software..."

* Select "Search automatically for updated driver software".

The item was then redetected as a "USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller", disappeared from the "System Devices" list and reappeared in the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section as "Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0100 (Microsoft)" and the USB devices immediately started functioning.

Initially I tried deleting/re-adding the devices under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" to no avail, and didn't know there was one up in "System Devices".

Hope this helps some people.

    Hi everyone,

    I'm having the same issues. I have been using Windows 8 Pro x64 for a long time but after the latest batch of Windows Update (which installed multiple updates including KB2756872) all my USB ports were dead.

    Both Keyboard and Mouse work fine in BIOS and also when in Automatic Recovery, etc.

    I tried to system restore but looks like the last restore point was created after the damage had been done. So even after recovery the update was still installed. And for some reason none of my previous restore points were there anymore, even ones I had manually created. (There was no button at the bottom to show additional restore points!)

    Luckily I still have a PS2 keyboard laying around. However, after uninstalling the updates my USB ports still did not work as it did for some of you.

    Upon further investigation, I discovered a yellow exclamation mark next to the USB OpenHCD controller which stated "USB driver is not digitally signed" even though the driver is made by Microsoft.

    So I tested it out... I disabled Driver Signing Enforcement and restarted the comp, and voila! Everything worked as normal.

    Looks like the Windows 8 Driver Signing Enforcement is preventing the USB drivers from loading at start up because they are not signed, thus killing the entire USB bus.

    If you're still struggling with this try restarting your computer with Driver Signing Enforcement Disabled and see if it works. You will need a PS2 keyboard/mouse or working touchscreen to navigate.

    Could someone from Microsoft please flag this and have the appropriate team sign the OpenHCD driver and include it in distribution?

    3 months or more passed since i reported this problem and still no solve. The last few days started to do it again and i got all updates up to day on computer . I have asus motherboard aswell.
