Windows Update KB2756872 kills USB ports

Hi. I've just gone through the update to Windows 8 Pro. I'm having a big problem with Update KB2756872. Whenever I perform the update all my USB ports cease to work. My motherboard is an I have an ASUS P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3. I've updated to the latest BIOS and drivers for everything I have (except the X-Fi Titanium, which doesn't have up to date drivers).

I've gone through an exhaustive process of elimination to try and find if it's a driver problem, and it doesn't seem to be. The problem is definitely linked to KB2756872. Each time it installs , the USB ports stop working. I have to force a restore to the previous restore point to get everything working again (I'm getting good at that now).

Please HELP!!!!!!!!

I fixed this dead USB ports issue on my friends PC running Win8 Pro x64 on Asus P8Z68-V Pro (Intel Z68) by going thru these following steps:

During POST, open up BIOS
Enter advanced mode
Go to "Advanced -> "USB Configuration"
Set both "USB Legacy Support" and "USB3.0 Legacy Support" to Disabled
Save and exit BIOS
Log on to Windows
Go to "Control Panel" -> "Windows Update"
Remove KB275872
Reboot and open BIOS again during POST
Set both "USB Legacy Support" and "USB3.0 Legacy Support" to Enabled
Save and exit BIOS
After logon go to "Control Panel" -> "Windows Update" and hide KB275872 which now should be in "Important updates". Keep it hidden and uninstalled until it's confirmed this issue with the update has been fixed.

These instructions might help on other motherboards/chipsets/BIOS versions aswell.

I have an asus p8p67. In my case, I can solve the problem by accessing the BIOS and telling the computer to boot from the "windows boot manager" instead of my main hard drive.

Looks like I've had the same problem and managed to resolve it. These were my steps:

* Open Device Manager

* Expand System Devices

* Right-mouse click on the "USB Host Controller" (or device in that section with similar name).

* Select "Update Driver Software..."

* Select "Search automatically for updated driver software".

The item was then redetected as a "USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller", disappeared from the "System Devices" list and reappeared in the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section as "Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0100 (Microsoft)" and the USB devices immediately started functioning.

Initially I tried deleting/re-adding the devices under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" to no avail, and didn't know there was one up in "System Devices".

A friend of mine and I are having exactly the same problem. We are both using Logitech keyboards, via a bluebooth interface. I dual-boot into Linux, which works perfectly - so it's not the keyboard.

I have followed all of the advice in this forum, and nothing is working.

This is VERY disappointing. I have less issues with Linux than I do with Windows 8. I got over the "web browsers not working" issue, and now I've hit this one.

Any help would be appreciated.

Note: I'm lucky that I have VNC on my machine because I can control my Windows 8 machine via my iPhone.

I hid the update sometime back but it installed itself again. It keeps doing it, For now I have turned off auto updates. I am going to redo my system this weekend from scratch. Only takes me about 30 minutes to do a base install with all my base software (flash, java, reader, office, etc...). My games take a tad longer. Either way I have passed on the bug to my Microsoft Support team. Wait and see if they get back to me on it. (one of the bene's of being a large scale corp customer and one of 13 MS test sites)

I have worked around the issue for now. Just annoying. Funny thing is I am running a dozen other Win 8 test/dev systems and none of them have any issues. My laptop is stable as heck. Only my gaming rig has the issue and like many others it is an ASUS board. I am starting to think this is an Asus issue, I wish Asus would finalize their drivers for my board. Right now they are all labeled beta. Asus Max z gen 3 board. Also oddly, the problem did not manifest right away. I got the update in mid October but it seemed to only manifest after I took my system from Windows 8 standard to Pro.

Ill do a clean install straight through as Pro and see if everything works itself out,
