My reaction is that you probably need to replace the hard drive. You certainly need to back up your data files while you can.

What is your computer make and model?

What is the hard drive make and model?

Do you have a retail or OEM Window XP CD or are you reliant on a branded copy of Windows XP on the hard drive? Do have the product key for activating after reinstalling?

You can run chkdsk and attempt a repair but this could make the situation worse.

    Hi,

Well at least now we know you have Windows XP so you should be asking in the Answers

    Windows XP Forums.

    =======================

Sounds  like the hard drive has developed an issue and it "may" be failing though that is

    not 100% at this point.

If CheckDisk fails to complete  <-- Manufacturer's Diagnostic Utilities.

(The old 302602 links is not valid now for the diagnostic links.)

Diagnostic Utilities By Manufacturer - run the one for your hard drive

As things are, I cannot see the wood for the trees. Would it be better to terminate this thread and go to Answers as applicable to XP SP3. I am getting instructions from several sources and instead of attempting things serially I am being given them in parallel.

What is your computer make and model? Answer: locally built

What is the hard drive make and model?

    ST3500320AS [Hard drive] (500.11 GB) -- drive 0, s/n 9QM832MB, rev SD15, SMART Status: Healthy

Do you have a retail or OEM Window XP CD or are you reliant on a branded copy of Windows XP on the hard drive? Do have the product key for activating after reinstalling?

No my DVD drive doesn't work. It cannot read or write and the drawer  opens at all odd moments.

a branded copy of Windows XP on the hard drive? Yes

Do have the product key for activating after reinstalling? No.

Note that I have gone to the Seagate website but see nothing that refers to diagnostics.
