Background Intelligent Transfer Service is missing in XP

Hi

I have been having problems installing updates from Microsoft Updates and looking at the error messages it tells me I need to check the properties of Background Intelligent Transfer Service but when I search this file it is missing,

How do I replace this missing file and how do i see any other registry files are missing?

I have XP Home Edition which I have just upgraded to SP3.  Windows Update has stopped working.  It has 27 files for me but they all fail to install.  There is no sign of BITS when I run services.msc, in either the Standard or Extended tabs. 

This method did not work for me, things go off track right from the start because when I run  %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\qmgr.inf it asks me for the original XP SP3 disc.  But my disc is only SP1. 

When I put that in and point the program at it, it copies a couple of files even though the target files being overwritten are newer than the ones on the disc, but then says it cannot copy a file with a name like bitsprix. 

This problem has occupied a ridiculous amount of time.  Can anyone please help?

Please do the following.

Open the Windows Search tool, copy/paste the following and then click Search: qmgr.dll

Search should show that file in the following locations:

C:\WINDOWS\system32

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

C:\WINDOWS\system32\bits

You may only see qmgr.dll in C:\WINDOWS\system32.

Go to Start, Run and copy/paste: regsvr32 qmgr.dll and click OK

Do the same with this file: regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll

Reboot the system and then copy/paste this command into the Run field:

%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\qmgr.inf

If you're prompted to insert the Windows installation CD, ignore that and in the dialog box at the bottom, change the path to C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

** Change the path to C:\WINDOWS\system32 if qmgr.dll was only present in that location.**

Restart the PC again and then go to Services and you should be able to see BITS in the list.

Double click it and then on the General tab, click the Start button to try and start the service manually. This is just a test to ensure that it's working correctly.

If you get Error 2: cannot find the file specified, go to Start, then Run again and copy/paste the following command and then click OK:

Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS\Parameters /v ServiceDll /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %windir%\System32\qmgr.dll

Reboot again and then try once more to start BITS. It should work properly now, but in the unlikely event that it fails again, run the following command and then hit Enter:

Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup

Reboot once more and then do the following.

Go to this link and install the  IE8 cumulative December update:

If you use IE7, use this link instead:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=41442

Finally, go to the Windows Update site and you should be able to download normally.

    Thank you VERY, VERY MUCH for your procedure on restoring BITS in Xp!!!  I had a customer PC that was annihilated by a darn virus.  It needed to be reformatted.  However, I had MAJOR problems with Windows AND Microsoft Updates--the WORST IN HISTORY!!!  I found out that if the BITS service is not all there, that can cause GRIEF with Windows updates.  Thank you VERY MUCH for the info!!!

    That got Windows Update working again, it installed the KB2833941 update, and it then found several more batches of updates all of which installed OK. 

    I'm assuming BITS may have disappeared initially through the action of malware, but I can't be sure.

    I doubt if it was malware somehow. I say that because I have a backup machine I never use and only keep it up te date every month by downloading the latest patches. That went down at the same time as the PC I'm using now.

    Anyway, glad to hear you're up and running again.

    Hi Xircal,

    I read somewhere else that stopping the MS Indexing Service might cure this problem.  In large measure it did, in so far as 26 out of 27 updates then installed correctly. 

    But one will still not install.  The error message is "Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2833941)."

    I read a Microsoft page that said their Fix It 50123 might sort this out.  It did not. 

    I have now run the IE8 cumulative update, as you recommended, but the one outstanding update will still not install, with the same error code. 

    Any further help would be much appreciated.

    Well, this is very strange. That file dates from July. I can't imagine why it would appear in Windows Update now unless it wasn't installed properly back then.

    Anyway, you can download it from here using IE

    You can safely run it while you have IE open.

    If when you run the file, you get a message that the version you have on your system already is newer than the one you're trying to install, then stop the installation.

    What finally sorted Windows Update out for me, after I got the BITS service back again, was uninstalling .NET framework 1.1 and reinstalling it.  I could not uninstall it through Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs, because I got an error message "Internal Error 2705. Directory".  Instead I followed the advice given here about using the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool and how to reinstall it again:
