An update to Movie Maker 2012 was just released today. It lowers the hardware requirements back to DirectX 9, so you might see if you can run it. There are more details in the pinned post. The version number is 16.4.3504.0912.  The details are also at the beginning of this (now very long) post.

So if you had DirectX 9 hardware that worked for WLMM 2011, give Movie Maker 2012 a go again.

Hello LD,

This issue affects the following versions of Movie Maker:

·         Windows Live Movie Maker 2011

·         Windows Movie Maker 2012

Here's what's happening:

1)

Movie Maker makes heavy use of video and graphics acceleration capabilities provided by a computer's video card to decode and encode video files and render effects, transitions and text. Sometimes video card drivers (the software that allows Windows and Movie Maker to interact with the video card) have issues that prevent Movie Maker from working correctly.

The following video cards and corresponding driver versions below have been identified as having issues that prevent Movie Maker 2011 and Movie Maker 2012 from working correctly. Movie Maker will not start with the following video cards and driver combinations.

To resolve the issue, install the latest video card driver version.

If you are running on DirectX 9 hardware, please ensure that you have installed the Windows Update for DirectX 9 support available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2741355, and that you are running the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012.

To verify that you have the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012, please do the following:

1.     In Movie Maker, press Alt + F on your keyboard to open the File menu

2.     Select About Movie Maker

3.     Verify that the version number is 16.4.3505.0912.

The latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012 can be downloaded at http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials-movie-maker-get-started

 Hope this helps,

    Hi ultimateBen,

I apologize for not responding on your query on a timely manner. I understand that your having the same issue that Movie Maker cannot start. For us to isolate your issue kindly ensure that your video card drivers are up to date - ****Movie Maker makes extensive use of the video card GPU (graphics processing unit). The display driver affects the reliability, performance, and compatibility of the video card with various software.

To determine the version and video card driver date, run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag):

DirectX Diagnostic Tool1.       Click on Start button and type “dxdiag” in the Search programs and files box and press Enter key on the keyboard.

    2.       Click on the Display tab and you will see the driver details including the driver version.

    3.       If your video card driver seems outdated please go to the video card driver manufacturer and see if a newer version is available.

Your cooperation on this matter will be highly appreciated. I'll look forward for your reply.

    Thank you.

Not sure if this will help but my specs for a very similar system (Acer 57xx series laptop, Intel HD Graphics, i3 M380 CPU instead of i5 M450, Windows 8.1 Pro instead of Windows 7 HP, 4GB Ram instead of 8GB support and run Movie Maker 2012 fine.  The pertinent information from 'dxdiag' is shown in bold print below.
