“Error code: c945000e Sorry, Movie Maker can't start …” when I start Movie Maker

Hello,

When I try to launch Windows Movie Maker, I get “Error code: c945000e Sorry, Movie Maker can't start …” What can I do to fix this?

An update to Movie Maker 2012 was just released today. It lowers the hardware requirements back to DirectX 9, so you might see if you can run it. There are more details in the pinned post. The version number is 16.4.3504.0912.  The details are also at the beginning of this (now very long) post.

So if you had DirectX 9 hardware that worked for WLMM 2011, give Movie Maker 2012 a go again.

Hello LD,

This issue affects the following versions of Movie Maker:

·         Windows Live Movie Maker 2011

·         Windows Movie Maker 2012

Here's what's happening:

1)

Movie Maker makes heavy use of video and graphics acceleration capabilities provided by a computer's video card to decode and encode video files and render effects, transitions and text. Sometimes video card drivers (the software that allows Windows and Movie Maker to interact with the video card) have issues that prevent Movie Maker from working correctly.

The following video cards and corresponding driver versions below have been identified as having issues that prevent Movie Maker 2011 and Movie Maker 2012 from working correctly. Movie Maker will not start with the following video cards and driver combinations.

To resolve the issue, install the latest video card driver version.

If you are running on DirectX 9 hardware, please ensure that you have installed the Windows Update for DirectX 9 support available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2741355, and that you are running the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012.

To verify that you have the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012, please do the following:

1.     In Movie Maker, press Alt + F on your keyboard to open the File menu

2.     Select About Movie Maker. 

3.     Verify that the version number is 16.4.3505.0912.

    At last!

    An answer that makes sense and fits the problem...

    I have another, newer video card that maybe I'll try.  In the meantime, I'll try to find and download Movie Maker 2011...

    I have professional video editing software on my main Video computer...I've just been trying to drop Movie Maker on my older email machine to try to help out a friend and maybe, if it's suitable, for quick "one off" video conversions, edits and burns that don't need the "full treatment"...

    It's pretty sad when 3 year old hardware get orphaned like this...

    1. Live Movie Maker 2011 is a component of Windows Live Essentials 2011.

     No mix and matching of version is allowed thus it can not be installed while Windows Essentials 2012 is present. (i.e. One has to completely remove the entire 2012 suite and then and only then reinstall the 2011 suite or individual application)

    1. Windows Essentials 2012 can be uninstalled via Programs and Features on Win7
    2. You can find links for the full version and web installer version of Windows Live Essentials 2011 on my blog. (all links are for the files stored on the Microsoft servers not third party hosting sites)
