“Error code: c945000e Sorry, Movie Maker can't start …” when I start Movie Maker

Hello,

When I try to launch Windows Movie Maker, I get “Error code: c945000e Sorry, Movie Maker can't start …” What can I do to fix this?

An update to Movie Maker 2012 was just released today. It lowers the hardware requirements back to DirectX 9, so you might see if you can run it. There are more details in the pinned post. The version number is 16.4.3504.0912.  The details are also at the beginning of this (now very long) post.

So if you had DirectX 9 hardware that worked for WLMM 2011, give Movie Maker 2012 a go again.

Hello LD,

This issue affects the following versions of Movie Maker:

·         Windows Live Movie Maker 2011

·         Windows Movie Maker 2012

Here's what's happening:

1)

Movie Maker makes heavy use of video and graphics acceleration capabilities provided by a computer's video card to decode and encode video files and render effects, transitions and text. Sometimes video card drivers (the software that allows Windows and Movie Maker to interact with the video card) have issues that prevent Movie Maker from working correctly.

The following video cards and corresponding driver versions below have been identified as having issues that prevent Movie Maker 2011 and Movie Maker 2012 from working correctly. Movie Maker will not start with the following video cards and driver combinations.

To resolve the issue, install the latest video card driver version.

If you are running on DirectX 9 hardware, please ensure that you have installed the Windows Update for DirectX 9 support available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2741355, and that you are running the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012.

To verify that you have the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012, please do the following:

1.     In Movie Maker, press Alt + F on your keyboard to open the File menu

2.     Select About Movie Maker. 

3.     Verify that the version number is 16.4.3505.0912.

    I have this same issue. 2011 works fine but 2012 doesnt. I have an ATI video card and not sure why it isnt listed on here. This is what I see. http://youtu.be/HHhuMQEU0yA?hd=1

    I downloaded the latest drivers listed up for my GEForce 7300 SE series card...

    Movie Maker STILL doesn't work...

    Same Message...

    Pretty weenie using the graphic card's resources for processing...

    Not sure if they added the additional information before or after your post. The original reply from Support appears to have been modifed at least once with more information since first published on Aug 9 (without a date change after modification).

    In any event...it now states (and apparently applicable to your video card)

    "Examples of common DirectX 9 video hardware that will not run Movie Maker 2012 include:

    NVIDIA GeForce 7000-series"

    Afaik, your GEForce 7300 SE series  is a GeForce 7000-series card.

    You can determine your Direct X display value by running the NVidia Control Pane applet (that program if you installed it can be found in the Windows Control Panel)

    • Open NVidia Control Panel
    • Look in the bottom of left hand pane (Select a Task...) and click on the item 'System Information'
    • The System Information Disply tab will report the Direct X runtime version for the operating system but more importantly also show your Graphics Card information and the 'Direct X support' value.  I suspect the Direct X support value says 9.0c... then the GeForce 7300 SE card can only run Windows Live Essentials Movie Maker 2011 and not Windows Essentials Movie Maker 2012.
