Hello,
When I try to launch Windows Movie Maker, I get “Error code: c945000e Sorry, Movie Maker can't start …” What can I do to fix this?

An update to Movie Maker 2012 was just released today. It lowers the hardware requirements back to DirectX 9, so you might see if you can run it. There are more details in the pinned post. The version number is 16.4.3504.0912. The details are also at the beginning of this (now very long) post.
So if you had DirectX 9 hardware that worked for WLMM 2011, give Movie Maker 2012 a go again.

· Windows Live Movie Maker 2011
· Windows Movie Maker 2012
Here's what's happening:
1)
Movie Maker makes heavy use of video and graphics acceleration capabilities provided by a computer's video card to decode and encode video files and render effects, transitions and text. Sometimes video card drivers (the software that allows Windows and Movie Maker to interact with the video card) have issues that prevent Movie Maker from working correctly.
The following video cards and corresponding driver versions below have been identified as having issues that prevent Movie Maker 2011 and Movie Maker 2012 from working correctly. Movie Maker will not start with the following video cards and driver combinations.
To resolve the issue, install the latest video card driver version.

If the generic video card drivers direct from Intel or NVIDIA listed above cannot be successfully installed on your computer, you may need to download the latest video card driver provided by the computer system manufacturer for your specific computer model. Start your search here:

If you are running on DirectX 9 hardware, please ensure that you have installed the Windows Update for DirectX 9 support available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2741355, and that you are running the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012.
To verify that you have the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012, please do the following:
1. In Movie Maker, press Alt + F on your keyboard to open the File menu
2. Select About Movie Maker.
3. Verify that the version number is 16.4.3505.0912.

Thanks so much for your post, but I have one question:
One month ago or so, NVIDIA updated their driver (or as they appear to call it, their "Control Panel". This is not the March 2012 version that is presented above.
Could newer drivers mean that the program cannot run?
Or, could I revert to the 2011 version to ensure that it will still work?
UPDATE: I'd like to note that last time I used Movie Maker (2011 version) in April, it worked fine.
The new Drivers for NVIDIA were updated in December.

My reply of Dec 14, 2012 was a response to ESG comment that version 2011 was not available (Can't get it') when it is still available.
As far as the best alternative to Movie Maker you'll have to tackle that task on your own.
(MM11 and 12 both function here on old and new hardware with one exception....*.flv files may create issues (won't load, fail to open etc.)
With this thread being 10 pages long (MSFT Mvp's like myself do not work for MSFT and are independent advisors) I'm skeptical that your exact issue is being monitored by support personnel.
It migh be better for you and anyone meeting the system requirements (o/s, hardware, updated video drivers etc. as noted on page 1 of this 10 page thread) and still having problems to start an entirely different thread.

Yes, you are right, this product is abandoned by Microsoft.
Adobe Premiere Elements is the best similiar program
"Premiere" is not free, it costs few tens of Dollars but you will get much more functions from it.
Problem of swithching from "Movie Maker" to "Premiere" is that you have to learn a new tool, that will cost you cost you couple PersonWeeks of effort.
On long run if you plan to go professional it will more than pay off.
