An update to Movie Maker 2012 was just released today. It lowers the hardware requirements back to DirectX 9, so you might see if you can run it. There are more details in the pinned post. The version number is 16.4.3504.0912.  The details are also at the beginning of this (now very long) post.

So if you had DirectX 9 hardware that worked for WLMM 2011, give Movie Maker 2012 a go again.

Hello LD,

This issue affects the following versions of Movie Maker:

·         Windows Live Movie Maker 2011

·         Windows Movie Maker 2012

Here's what's happening:

1)

Movie Maker makes heavy use of video and graphics acceleration capabilities provided by a computer's video card to decode and encode video files and render effects, transitions and text. Sometimes video card drivers (the software that allows Windows and Movie Maker to interact with the video card) have issues that prevent Movie Maker from working correctly.

The following video cards and corresponding driver versions below have been identified as having issues that prevent Movie Maker 2011 and Movie Maker 2012 from working correctly. Movie Maker will not start with the following video cards and driver combinations.

To resolve the issue, install the latest video card driver version.

If you are running on DirectX 9 hardware, please ensure that you have installed the Windows Update for DirectX 9 support available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2741355, and that you are running the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012.

To verify that you have the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012, please do the following:

1.     In Movie Maker, press Alt + F on your keyboard to open the File menu

2.     Select About Movie Maker

3.     Verify that the version number is 16.4.3505.0912.

The latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012 can be downloaded at http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials-movie-maker-get-started

Bobby, this is the absolutely BESTEST explanation so far for this issue!  Thank you!!

I am the unlucky owner of a NVidia video card that doesn't support DirectX 10 or higher.  I have been having numerous problems with both WLMM V 2011 and 2012.

Can anyone recommend a replacement video card?  I have hours and hours of family videos I am making into family dvd's and this must be resolved.  If someone can just point me to the right brand, I might be able to make the correct choice.  Obviously NVidia isn't it, lol!  Nor are several others, of which I have one of the Intels on my laptop.  Guess I won't be using that for this project.

My desktop PC runs Pentium Dual Core, E6500, 2.93GHz, 4GB RAM, 32 bit Win7 Home Premium.

    Thanks again!

    Sharon

    @J-1ZH

The link Alex provided was for an Intel HD Graphics driver not a sound card driver.

If you need to update your Sound card driver you'll have to download a driver for the RealTech HD Audio ( since the Intel F16/x7\Setup.ex is only for the Intel HD Graphics chip not the sound chip)

    Realtek ALC665 Audio

Once the page loads change the 'Operating System' field from Bios to Windows 7 64bit.

i.e. Switching it to 64bit will provide a list of all Windows 64 bit drivers that Dell has released for your machine

If you continue to have problems with Messenger (this is the Movie Maker forum) it might be better and appropriate to start a new thread post in the Messenger forum.

Hi Alex, it works now.  Thank you so very much for your help.

How would I know to update the sound drivers, etc?  I have realtech High definition Audio driver.  As when I'm in messenger it keeps popping up for me to update sound driver for some reason.

I didn't know i had to extract the driver as that sort of thing is new to me, but I copied and pasted what you have typed in to search programs, C:\Dell\Drivers\F16X7\Setup.exe and it seemed to extract, turn machine off and on again, etc.
