Windows 8 updates won't install

My pc is functioning as it should, except that updates KB 2770917, KB2737084, KB2761226, KB2769034, KB2769165 and KB2727528 will not install, despite numerous attempts and running the troubleshooter.

Previous updates have installed without problem.

I have tried disabling the NLS service but this has not helped. 

I have tried fully uninstalling the only recently added software but the updates would still not install.

I have disabled the firewall in my antivirus software.

My Windows 8 was installed from disc as an upgrade to Windows 7

    Hate to keep beating a dead horse, but I figure if Microsoft hears enough complaints they might try to send a fix before it loses whatever loyal customers they have, and I say loyal with tongue in cheek.  I have been one who likes, not loves, Windows 8; but this issue seems to be a list of many to come .  I only got Windows 8 recently, so I have not run into too many disappointments, but I am beginning to wonder if the proverbial shoe(s) are just waiting to fall. Glad I kept my Windows 7 installation discs.  I May be, as someone aptly put it, upgrading FROM Windows 8 back to Windows 7.  Hurry up Microsoft, I have little patience with sloppy work.  Nuff said!!!

    I've been having some major problems here myself lately. I can't update my Lumia Windows Phone to the newer 7.8 version because the Zune update won't work. In fact, the update for my Microsoft keyboard won't work either. You think updates for their own products would work, but obviously not.

    A quick question Dr Nick. Does the refresh option remove license information from the registry as well, or just the programs? I would happy to do a refresh, but have a few programs with just a single license.

    Hi Fiona,

    Sorry to hear you are having problems with your new Windows 8 PC.

    Unfortunately, if you follow my advice and 'Refresh your PC' you will have to re-install all your applications: Microsoft Office, Skype, Chrome etc. N.B. 'Metro' apps (downloaded from the Windows store) will be preserved. I appreciate re-installing applications is a pain but I found it a better option than wasting even more hours hunting for a solution online. To re-install an application you will need the original installation disk or download the latest version online.

    I suspect the Windows update is failing because there is a conflict with one of the applications you have installed or with one of the applications that came pre-installed on your PC. I wouldn't worry too much about the pre-installed applications as most of these are unnecessary bloat and just slow down your PC. I recommend you make a list of all the application you actually need before you perform the 'Refresh' so you know what to re-install once the refresh completes.

    I hope this helps you decide if the 'Refresh your PC' option is the right solution for you and I wish you all the best in resolving this issue,

    Hi Everyone,

     

    Sorry to hear I am not the only one suffering with update issues on Windows 8. I wasted far too many hours following the suggestions on this forum but to no avail.

     

    Finally, solved this issue by performing a Windows 8 PC refresh. Slide your mouse down (or swipe from) the left hand desktop edge to access the 'Settings' charm; click 'Change PC settings' (bottom option); select the 'General' heading under 'PC settings', scroll down and click the 'Get started' button under the 'Refresh your PC without affecting your files' heading.

     

    NB This option will uninstall all you 'old' windows style applications (which you will need to re-install manually afterwards) but it does preserve all your user files and settings.

     

    After performing this procedure I was able to install all current Windows 8 updates from the Windows Update console. Now I just need to re-install all my old Windows applications and hopefully that will be me sorted.

    PS I am not sure why the Windows support guys on this forum haven't suggested this option as it's far easier than messing around with boot options and it actually resolves the issue!

     

    Hi Dr Nick, I've been having the same problem with my new Windows 8 PC since I bought it last weekend. The updates get to 15%, fails, the machine re-starts and then reconfigures back to the original settings. Unfortunately I'm not technical so I don't understand what you mean by "reinstall the old Windows applications"... What are these and how would I reinstall them? What about all the software I've spent hours loading - will I lose all of that too..?

    Any help and advice gratefully accepted.
