cannot use windows update on windows 7. 32 bit. keep getting code error:80246008 ? cannot detect a system update readiness tool on my computer. ive ran SFS/SCANNOW and its come up with nothing ? tried downloading the system update readiness tool in standalone and i get an update hotfix for windows hotfix KB947821, whick goes to initialising installation but does not install ? any suggestions please.... would be very much appreciated.... cheers

funnily enough , windows defender is one of the things that disappeared during that 2 week period ? i tried to reinstall it a while ago but couldnt, but managed to find pc security essentials instead and now i have that running ....i shall run the SFC/SCANNOW now...

Noel It's a Toshiba. It was originally Vista and has been upgraded. These could be a reason for lack of stability. Another was the presence of TuneUp Utilities 2012 which has been removed. Neil ran and SuperAntiSpyware twice to try to ensure the system was clean. Unfortunately the first time he did not realise the need to disable Kasperky first but I hope he has learnt that lesson. Kaspersky obviously did not detect some malware, which is what Malwarebytes picked up.

Upgradng Vista to 7 doesn't introduce instabilities in the same way that upgrading from 9x to 9x+ or 9x to XP did - it's a very different process, and a lot more bullet-proof. Neil - Kaspersky is designed to switch Defender off so don't worry about that. Once saved, close Notepad.

You'll get a couple of warnings - accept them.

Reboot

now open an Elevated Command Prompt Window and COPY AND PASTE the following commands
