FileHistory - unable to scan user libraries for changes and perform backup of modified files for configuration \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration\Config

* In short: you have to use your Windows 10 DVD/USB-Drive to correct corrupted files in your profile.

Here's the Solution, that's works for me.

I'm using Windows 10 x64 Ver 10.0.10586.0 (German) at the time.

I want to backup my 350Gb Files (Pics, Docs, Music) and files of other users, connected to the HomeNetwork on a Network Drive, connected to the WiFi(WLAN)-Router, which is accessible as a 1Gb Network Drive. My Documents Folder Consist of Filenames with German Umlauts (öäü) like "Übung.doc", english Letters (usual ones), Cyrillic symbols like "погода.jpg" and in some Filenames exists special Charakters like "# % & { } ~". I´ve managed to back them all up to the destination Network Drive.

* The problem is not your Files with Umlauts, Cyrillic and special characters "öäü жфг # % & { } ~", but the System Files + your Account. To prove that, you can create another clean account with no files in it, save some File with the perfect filename line "perfect.txt" and a bad name like "Überraschung (охренеть).txt" to the Documents Folder, run backup from that account (Dateiversionsverlauf), and your file will be saved to Network Drive.

The possible way to run the Backup (Dateiversionsverlauf):

1. Make sure that the problem exist: Win+X -> System und Sicherheit -> Dateiversionsverlauf -> Erweiterte Einstellungen -> Öffen Sie die Dateiversionsverlauf-Ereignisprotokolle, um...

Here you'll get a list of your problems with Error-ID's like 200, 201,202. You can delete the Protokoll.

2. Open Command Prompt/Powershell with elevated rights (Win -> type CMD -> right click "run as Admin"). Enter Password if needed.
3. Type "sfc /scannow". After some time you'll get a result. Usually it will be like "problems were found and could not be corrected". But if everything is fine and you cannot run the backup/it's not working - I don't know how to help you.
4. You'll need an ISO-File with your Windows 10 (exactly the same language and version and BitVersion) OR USB Drive with your Windows 10 on it, OR a DVD with the Windows 10 on it.

In my case, I've installed it "oldschool" from a DVD, cos I don't have spare USB Drive at hand. Before installing Windows, I've created that DVD using "Media Creation Tool". On the disk "E:\sources" you'll find "install.esd", the biggest file on the disk. This is a compressed version of Windows with different versions of Windows in it(Pro/Home Premium), each of them has an Index (a number, important) in that install.esd.

5. Check out if your installed Windows on C: drive x32 or x64, and a Version (Win -> type "cmd" -> type "ver"). Mine is 10.0.10586
6. Check out what version of Windows 10 is on your DVD/USB: Win+E -> E:\sources\install.esd -> Properties -> look for the Version. I assume, the version is the same. Otherwise you have a problem.
7. Check what Indexes in the Source DVD/USB "E:\sources\install.esd" exists. You need to type in the cmd:

dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:E:\sources\install.esd

You'll get a list of versions like "Pro, Home Premium". In my case, Pro version. My index is 1. Important.

7. While install.esd is a compressed version and directly won't work, you have to convert install.esd to install.wim and save it to your Disk Drive(DHH/SSD). Do it with one line in the command Prompt with Admin rights:

dism /Export-Image /SourceImageFile:E:\sources\install.esd /SourceIndex:1 /DestinationImageFile:D:\install.wim /Compress:recovery

Where E:\sources\install.esd is my DVD with Windows 10 installation Files. D:\install.wim is a place on a local HDD. SourceIndex is your variant of Windows (in my case it's Pro, index varies depend if your have multilingual or whatever).It takes a while, but you get your install.wim file with Windows on HDD/SSD.

8. Restore your system Files with the command:

dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:D:\image.wim:1 /LimitAccess

where D:/image.wim is your newly created file on your HDD, :1 is a Index. After it's done,

9. Run again:

sfc /scannow

I hope the problems will be solved. Rboot.

10. To make sure, run sfc /scannow to check if the integrity of the systemFiles/userAccount is fine and you can configure your backup as usual.

I found the same bug with the eszett letter:

But someelse found this bug in 2012 with Windows 8, too. Its sad that Microsoft does not display the Event 201 with the file that caused the error. Or it would be much better if those files would be skipped and displayed as notification in the windows notification center.

I'm using Windows 10, Build 14342. I was getting Event ID 201: "Unable to scan user libraries for changes and perform backup of modified files for configuration" until I finally narrowed it down to a file that had a bad filename. The filename had an underlined n. I don't know how a filename can have or get an underlined letter.

It took awhile (many hours) to narrow it down. I had to do exclude a lot of folders and then subfolders and sub-subfolders until I saw the suspicious file. After I deleted the file with the bad filename, I didn't have to exclude any files and the backup works as it should.

These are not music files, but for those who are having trouble backing up their music, I can say I've seen bad filenames created by iTunes. So you just have to look at all your folders and narrow the problem to a particular folder and then find the bad filename.

My bad filename was an old file, which I suspect came from a floppy disk originally.

Of course, it would certainly be helpful if File History had a way to indicate which folder or even the file that caused the Event ID 201 to occur.

It would also be helpful to have an easier interface for including and excluding folders. It's a real pain to add and remove folders, and the lists are not sorted. I would think the way you list Libraries (in File Explorer) and Add folders to Libraries or remove folders from Libraries is much better.

I wish there was more information that just the date and time of the last backup. It would be nice to know how many files were copied. I have to say though, the backup goes very fast.
