Hi,

Windows 8 x64 Pro in dual boot with Win 7 on a SSD.

Partitions layout:

1 - WIN 8 - ntfs - C: - 70 GB

2 - WIN 7 - ntfs - F: - 140 GB

3 - System Reserved - ntfs - none - 200MB (active)

4 - 28,30 GB unallocated for over provisioning

[Short explanation on why this is the layout]

I had to use this because my BIOS couldn't even POST in AHCI mode due to the problem described here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproinstall/thread/0185fced-0564-412f-8e10-bec37d020c81 (= first partition can't be littler than some gbs), so I moved System Reserved partition to the end of the drive, done the needed repair here and there and since then all worked fine and good.

Now, File History on Win8 is absolutely needed for me so I bought a brand new 2TB drive, ntfs formatted, for the purpose.

Problem is it always starts and stops immediately this way:

It does create four files in C:\Users\Matteo\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration :

Catalog1.edb 19.464 KB

Catalog2.edb 1.032 KB

Config1.xml 4 KB

Config2.xml 4 KB

and just these in the target D:\FileHistory\Matteo\HOME-PC\Configuration :

Catalog1.edb 1.032 KB

Config1.xml 4 KB

Config2.xml 4 KB

The window of file history acts as if everything went OK but stops.

Found old threads about Win8 preview version but they was not useful.

Tried the Windows Backup, the one as it was on Win7. Now here on Win8 it works. Well, this is just to confirm that partitions layout seems ok, otherwise it would not have worked. I still need FileHistory to start succesfully...

Same error here. No backups for the past month without notification. I was really annoyed.

I tried to remove my libraries, restarted, no solution.

In the end I did this and FileHistory started working again:

Turn it off in the File History control panel
Close the control panel
Go to your filehistory directory C:\Users[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory and set aside the Data and Configuration directories (Check the event for the exact directory location)
Open File History control panel
Reselect the backup disk
I think it was switched on automatically, otherwise do that

The Configuration and Data directories were remade and everything runs OK (for the moment).

File History is buggy and could use a better set of error messages.

Hello,

I have resolved the problem!!!

Unplug your external hard drive then in the file history select another drive ex.: a partition on your internal hard drive.

Start File History to save copies from your file then stop it.

Go to your partition look for folder File History and copy the folder with all of its content to your external hard drive. It will copy the Config1.Xml, Config2.Xml, Catalog1.ebd , Catalog2.ebd what's in your Configuration folder what I think is synchronizing with C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration ->folder there is to a Config1.Xml, Config2.Xml, Catalog1.ebd , Catalog2.ebd.

Now if you finished copying go back to ControlPanel\FileHistory settings ->Select you external harddrive and start File History to copy your files.

I hope it will help.

Yes, I wished Windows explicitly/overtly warned you if File Backup is not working. As you say, it really defeats its purpose (of reliably doing unattended backups).

I believe File Backup is working if it shows (in Backup options Overview) the Last backup date and time, which is a few hours ago depending on your backup frequency. Do you agree?

Had the same problema in several computers on a our ****.

In the end, I've seen a lot of people here adding lots of complicated solutions, but it seems that the main cause for the problema remains that FileHistory will stop without warning whenever there is a file it doesn't like.

Now, some people report strange characers in names, but the truth is that there doesn't seem to be any fixed rule. One thing is for sure, if you have this problem, the most likely cause is a rogue file somewhere, and the easiest way of finding it is start removing folders one after one until you find it.

I just left the Log report open, and start removing my libraries one by one, then its subfolders, etc. then run and check, run and check, until no new error was logged, then tracked the file. It's tedious, but if you do it in an orderly fashion it's not the end of the world.

Don't forget:
- Standard Windows libraries
- Desktop
- Favorites
- OneDrive
- SharePoint

PS1: As so many others said, I wished Windows warned me that File History was not working...

The fact that it does not kind of defeats its use as a backup solution...

PS2: In my case all the problems where with files with Japanese characters, when two of them had the same filename using different character sets (half-width vs. full-witdh characters).

* In short: you have to use your Windows 10 DVD/USB-Drive to correct corrupted files in your profile.

Here's the Solution, that's works for me.

I'm using Windows 10 x64 Ver 10.0.10586.0 (German) at the time.

I want to backup my 350Gb Files (Pics, Docs, Music) and files of other users, connected to the HomeNetwork on a Network Drive, connected to the WiFi(WLAN)-Router, which is accessible as a 1Gb Network Drive. My Documents Folder Consist of Filenames with German Umlauts (öäü) like "Übung.doc", english Letters (usual ones), Cyrillic symbols like "погода.jpg" and in some Filenames exists special Charakters like "# % & { } ~". I´ve managed to back them all up to the destination Network Drive.

* The problem is not your Files with Umlauts, Cyrillic and special characters "öäü жфг # % & { } ~", but the System Files + your Account. To prove that, you can create another clean account with no files in it, save some File with the perfect filename line "perfect.txt" and a bad name like "Überraschung (охренеть).txt" to the Documents Folder, run backup from that account (Dateiversionsverlauf), and your file will be saved to Network Drive.

Most of the chars are not "bad", but some cause problems in specific situations. You can easily test that on your own. Create two text files. One with the name "tesst.txt" and the other with the name "teßt.txt". If you place both in your library in the same folder and start the filehistory it will stop with the event 201. This has nothing to do with a corrupt system files. Its simply a bug in windows 8 and windows 10 filehistory.

P.S. sfcscan reports very often problems because of Nvidia drivers. Search for "opencl.dll". Its crazy how many results you will find.
