Windows Live Mail (WLM) - error: server rejects login to gmail account

Hi, can anyone help with this problem please.  I hope this is the right forum if not please advise where I should post this query.

If I access my gmail account in a browser I have no problems sending or receiving email, even when hiding my IP address (for example when using unprotected WIFI access points).

However as soon as I try access my gmail account using Windows Live Mail (whether hiding my IP address or not) I regularly get an error "The server has rejected your login. Please verify that your user name and password are correct".

I've investigated this in Live Mail support pages and my gmail setup is as advised as is my WLM setup.

Any ideas appreciated?  THIS PROBLEM HAS SOMEHOW CORRECTED ITSELF - NO MORE REPLIES PLEASE.  THANK YOU.

    We're sorry for any inconvenience this may caused. Are you saying that you're having problems on setting up your Gmail account in Windows Live Mail? Let us know. You said it will not accept your log-in.

    We ask you to provide us the exact error that you receive and it would be better if you can give us the exact steps you did prior to experiencing the problem.

    My problem with setting up Windows Live Mail to use IMAP for my gmail account is that after a short time, it begins getting connection errors. I have massive amounts of messages as I don't spend time deleting them.

    It may be that it is simply timing out due to the time it takes to read through all folders. If this is the case, can't it just scan for new, moved, deleted headers rather than reading everything?

    Hi David, I wrote about a year ago I think, and I do have (Or did have) periodic problems with Gmail, and WLMail. Lately all has been fine though. I even just stored a couple o thousand emails in a few storage folders in WLM, and cleaned out my Inbox, and then had to go to Gmail to also delete them 2 more times, as they were stored still in Gmails inbox, and Important box?? too. (Just a week ago). I dont know why issues happen, but my inbox grew n grew after my problem a year ago, so I dont think it was too many emails in my Inbox.

    As for you having a lot of folders, Im not sure about, I hide needless folders, and just keep Inbox, sent, and trash, Thats about it. I Cant remember finding an exact cause, for any of the issues Ive had, with WLM and Gmail Imap. (ps, I found how to move and/or delete multiple emails easily on WLM, By using Shift and/or Control. I never knew that before. Im not up with hotkeys. Im too old to have learnt that stuff)

    Have you still been having issues all this past year? WLM-Gmail is a great system when all is well Eh?

    EDIT; I receive emails with Imap, but send via SMTP, with my local BBand providers email system "Xtra", using Yahoo's system. When I occasionally go to Yahoo mail site, all my emails since last time I looked, are unread. hundreds of them! So when I read them in WLM, Gmail marks them as Read, but Yahoo, or Xtra(pop) doesnt mark them read. Thats my only prob now.

    I experienced the same problem (although possibly for a different reason) when trying to use a gmail account with Windows Live Mail on a Windows 8.1 Laptop. I could log on to my G mail account using internet explorer. However the same password was rejected using the default settings in Windows live mail. I also received an e mail from G mail warning about a possible unauthorized log in attempt that was automatically blocked. I was directed to the link below to solve the problem.

    Allowing less secure apps to access your account:

    https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en

    I followed the directions to allow less secure apps and now G Mail works fine with Windows Live Mail.

    Hi, I still get the occasional error but its generally OK. I just wanted to write and laugh at how Gmail thinks WLM is a less secure app? Haha. Well, I suppose, everything is less secure these days. Especially Gmail, as opposed to WLM.

    At least WLM emails are stored on My PC, and not up in the clouds.
