On the Surface Pro go to **devices>project>**and select second screen only. This turns off your laptop screen and makes the monitor the primary screen and protected content is now displayable thru the mini display port..

This feedback was provided under Windows 7, however action has not been taken to correct this issue for Windows 8 either.
ERROR:
Display driver error – the video playback device does not support playback of protected content.
ISSUE:
Media Center with a CableCard tuner doesn't work at all on DisplayPort, because DisplayPort is not detected as HDCP compliant by Media Center. CableLabs Certifited DisplayPort as HDCP compliant but Media Center still hasn't been updated and it still thinks that it's not compliant.
REQUEST:
Requesting Microsoft to produce a patch so that DisplayPort is detected as HDCP compliant by Media Center.

2014-11-27T16:27:00+00:00 Yes. You could always see protected content that you purchased on the system you are using. The problem is that you could not view that same content on an attached TV monitor via the mini port (HDMI). If you make that monitor TV your primary display then you can view any content on it since it's now your primary display.

2014-11-27T19:24:20+00:00 My problem was actually a little different. On an SP2 or SP3 that uses DP for video, I could not view encrypted cable tuner broadcast or record on that device. I didn't try it through an external device, since my goal was to actually view it on my tablet.
