I had the same issue with my synology disk station. For me the following solution was helpful:

Perform System File Check (SFC), and then check if this fixes the issue.

    Follow the steps:

    a.       Press “Windows Key + Q” to open Charms Bar.

    b.      Type “cmd” without quotes in the search box.

    c.       On the left pane, right click on the “cmd” option and select “Run as Administrator”.

    d.      Type “sfc /scannow” without quotes and hit enter.

Note: It may ask for windows installation DVD to fix and to enable SFC to make more than minor repairs. Some files saved on your computer might get deleted when fixing corrupted files.

I have been battling this over the past few days on Windows Server Essentials 2012. I think I have a solution to this problem.

I have been trying to use Task Scheduler to run a daily backup to a Synology DS1515+, which I have made a network share ( I'll call this \NAS on here). I created a task, ran it with "highest privileges", etc. In the "Action window, my settings were:

    Program/script: wbadmin

Add arguments: start backup -backupTarget:\NAS\FullBackup -allCritical -user:Username -password:Password -quiet

It failed everytime with the same error as you were getting. However, I have just changed the network share name to the NAS IP Address and it ran without a hiccup. So the structure of my working backup settings are:

    Program/script: wbadmin

Add arguments: start backup -backupTarget:\10.10.10.15\FullBackup -allCritical -user:Username -password:Password -quiet

So for people using windows 7/8/8.1/10, maybe try using \[IP Address]\Folder instead of \NetworkShare\Folder and see if that helps.

I searched the problem a bit more and finally got the Windows 7 Backup to work on my Windows 8 computer.  Here is what I needed to do.  I created a new share on the Western Digital Sentinel running Windows server 2008 Storage and set the permission to allow Everyone with Full Control on this share.  I also allowed Everyone to have Full Control on the folder for this share.  When I configured the Windows 7 Backup on my Windows 8 Pro computer, I still needed to provide a user ID and password.  With these changes, the backup with system image was successful.  Hope this will help.

This is the nut of the problem.  Win 8 does not precisely recognize permissions as set under non windows operating systems.  Microsoft has a long history of pushing proprietary MS only solutions in favor over generic industry wide standards. Nothing new here.  It's just extremely frustrating for the end user who only desires to get the job done.
