ntldr missing error message Windows xp home

Hey,

I turned my pc off the other night closed as normal but now I am getting the NTLDR missing error message, I do not have the Windows dics as it is a 6 year old pc.  The computer is a Pachard Bell but I have upgraded the system and I dont think it has any of their parts left, I have norton running on the system, any ideas how to fix this? I have looked at a lot of help pages but all of them talk about the windows cd, is it a major problem if I do not have this?

Any help would be great.

    I'm not sure, but I think you did something wrong when you were attempting to create a new boot.ini file. I really think you should go back to my post on page 1 of this thread and follow Jose's instructions TO THE LETTER. And then for good measure, while you are still in Recovery Console, run the following commands:

    fixboot

    fixmbr

    If that doesn't work, all I got left is to recommend you perform a Clean Install (of course, all your data will have needed to be backed up first). But perhaps Tech-Geek can think of something I overlooked.

    Yes...  just start over by renaming or deleting your c:\boot.ini and make a new one.

    In a single partition configuration, XP doesn't even need a c:\boot.ini to boot, so if you rename yours (be sure you are at in the Recover Console at the C:\ prompt):

    rename c:\boot.ini   c:\boot.ini.bad

    Then your c:\boot.ini file is "missing" and you won't have a c:\boot.ini, then see if you can boot.

    XP will complain about the missing file, but should still boot just fine (if there are no other issues), then you can create a proper c:\boot.ini using any text editor (WordPad, Notepad, etc.) or fix your afflicted one and rename it back.

    OK guys,

    Thank you for all your help with this, unfortunately I am still unable to get the system working, going to do it the easy way and have windows 7 on its way, take that windows error.

    Are you sure your PC is CAPABLE of running Windows 7?

    If you are giving up on repairing your system, i would imagine that a Clean Install of Windows XP would be the way to go.`

    1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your CD drive and restart your computer. If you are prompted, select any options required to start (boot) from the CD. Follow the instructions at the end if you do not have a Windows disc.

      

    1. When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts. Select the repair or recover option by pressing R.

      

    1. If you have a dual-boot or multiboot system, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.

      

    1. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If you have not set a password for the admin account simply press enter

      

    1. At the command prompt, type fixboot > press enter. Confirm at the prompt you may receive.
    2. Next, on the command prompt type fixmbr > press Enter. Again confirm at the prompt.
    3. You should receive a message after typing the above commands the action was successfully completed.  Type exit > press enter.

      

    1. Restart your computer.

    If you do not have a Windows Xp disc, follow the instructions HERE to create a Windows Xp Recovery Console.

    #4 - the administrator password that I had written down won't work.  Is there a way to get around this or reset the password?
