Tried changing product key to one at the backside of computer which is different from the one in computer properties which is OEM activated copy- No luck same error 0x8007040426. Other information - windows installer is on manual. changed to automatic - still same. Help!!

PLEASE only do what is requested - otherwise we have no idea what's actually happening!

You didn't run the command set in an Elevated Command Prompt window - but an ordinary User window - this means that I cannot read what's necessary.

Please repeat the exercise, following my instructions!

Your problem appears to be that the Software Licensing Service is not running. and it must, if Vista is not to complain.

Have you been using any form of Registry Cleaner??

First check that the Service is set to start Automatically –

Click on Start,

in the Search box, type

SERVICES.MSC

and hit the Enter key.

Accept the UAC prompt, then look in the listing for the Software Licensing Service –right-click on it and select Properties.

Make sure that it’s set to Automatic, and click Apply

Once that’s properly set, Start the service –how long before it appears to stop again? Is there anything in the Event Viewer to indicate why it stopped? – is there an error message?

Please run the following commands in an Elevated (Admin) Command Prompt Window, and post the results.

net start slsvc

sc qc slsvc

sc queryex slsvc

sc qprivs slsvc

sc qsidtype slsvc

sc sdshow slsvc

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

  1. To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
  2. To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
  3. To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

    Hi Noel,

Noted. My Vista was preloaded by OEM. I do not have the disk only a recovery partition drive. The tutorial for repair installation was not very confident that OEM recovery drive will work. Any guidance on this.

Sorry, no - that's the best such tutorial I know of.

Yu can order a set of Recovery media from the manufacturer (usually!) - that should work for a clean install, but the repair install of Vista was always a little problematic (possibly because of OEM failings more than Vista failings)

    Hi Noel,

I am referring back to where we left. I managed to get a CD but that too would not allow an upgrade install only clean install. In order to avoid that, I have continued to research on Google to see if any solution works.

One thing I found was that the Windows Firewall was corrupted. I copied the key from a Windows 7 computer and merged it to the registry. That worked and windows firewall activated. The security centre is also showing all OK. However still software licencing is not starting.

I then followed another of your earlier post to someone on SLUI notify. I  had the same message that 'unauthorized change made to window" etc. So as per your advice at that time I checked Windowss/System32 properties, removed the 'read only' blob 'error message - access denied' Selected ignore all and processes.

Tried Net start slsvc. Was a success but stopped again.

Went back and checked properties of Windows/System32 and again 'Readonly' blob was highlighted.

Continued further research and came across your marathon advice to Laura pledger in March 2012. Reviewed the entire post. Checked NTUSER.DAT file. Size 256 KB, Was updated at the last boot.

    Checked permissions for H-Key_User/S-1-5-20.

Network services has full control. However There is another group /user "Restricted' right on top which has read only permission.

I am not sure if this should be there as I did not notice this in the post by Laura Pledger when she checked permissions for S-1-5-20

When I went to Permissions - Add  - Advanced  - Find Now, I could not see any 'Restricted' group mentioned there.

Can you offer any advice? I have a feeling I am very close to getting this fixed.
