Tried changing product key to one at the backside of computer which is different from the one in computer properties which is OEM activated copy- No luck same error 0x8007040426. Other information - windows installer is on manual. changed to automatic - still same. Help!!

PLEASE only do what is requested - otherwise we have no idea what's actually happening!

You didn't run the command set in an Elevated Command Prompt window - but an ordinary User window - this means that I cannot read what's necessary.

Please repeat the exercise, following my instructions!

Your problem appears to be that the Software Licensing Service is not running. and it must, if Vista is not to complain.

Have you been using any form of Registry Cleaner??

First check that the Service is set to start Automatically –

Click on Start,

in the Search box, type

SERVICES.MSC

and hit the Enter key.

Accept the UAC prompt, then look in the listing for the Software Licensing Service –right-click on it and select Properties.

Make sure that it’s set to Automatic, and click Apply

Once that’s properly set, Start the service –how long before it appears to stop again? Is there anything in the Event Viewer to indicate why it stopped? – is there an error message?

Please run the following commands in an Elevated (Admin) Command Prompt Window, and post the results.

net start slsvc

sc qc slsvc

sc queryex slsvc

sc qprivs slsvc

sc qsidtype slsvc

sc sdshow slsvc

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

  1. To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
  2. To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
  3. To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

    Hi Nithyananda,

Thanks. Following was the result which I got.

Step 1: I went to Safe Mode. Opened Services.msc.

Software licensing is already set to Automatic. Anyhow I clicked properties - changed to manual and then back to Automatic - Apply - OK - Restart service. I got the following error message -

"Windows could not start software licensing service on local computer. Error - 1084."

Step 2: I did the system restore. Again checked services.msc. Still same situation with software licensing service which gave error 1084 when I tried to restart.

So far I have not been successful. Would appreciate any other advice!!

    Thanks Noel,

I tried once again by opening the services and restarting software licencing service. It is already set on Automatic. I changed to manual and back to automatic - Apply - restart service. I got a error message - "Windows could not start software licensing service on local computer. Error - 1084"

The service did not start at all with respect to your query as to the duration before it stopped again.

I then went to the elevated command prompt window and ran the commands suggested by you. Following is the result -Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]

    Hi,

    Method 1:

    Step 1:

I would suggest you to check in safe mode.

    1. Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.

advanced startup options (including safe mode).

Log on to your computer with a user account that has administrator rights.

    Now in the command prompt:

    1. Type services.msc, and then press Enter.
    2. In the list of services locate Software Licensing
    3. Right-click it, select Properties
    4. Change “Startup type:” to Automatic, then click OK
    5. You may then need to select Software Licensing again then click “Restart the service” located in the top-left corner for it to take effect immediately, or just restart the computer if doing this from Safe Mode.

For more information, please refer to the below link:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

    Step 2:

If the problem is same with safe mode, then I would suggest you to perform a system restore.

System Restore helps you restore your computer's system files to an earlier point in time. It's a way to undo system changes to your computer without affecting your personal files, such as e‑mail, documents, or photos.

To perform system restore, please follow the steps below :

    · Open System Restore by clicking the Start button, clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking System Tools, and then clicking System Restore.‌ If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

For more information, please refer to the below link :

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-is-System-Restore

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode

I hope that this information helps. Please get back to us if you have any more questions about this issue.

If the above doesn’t work, I would also suggest you to contact the manufacturer to see if there is any suggestion. Microsoft Activation Center may not help on OEM systems.
