Fixed mine. There are no Windows 8 drivers available on Canon's website or Windows Update. Follow these steps to install a Canoscan 8400F scanner under Windows 8 x64 in desktop mode:

(1) Download and install the Windows 7 x64 drivers from the Canon website.

(2) Launch Device Manager, right-click and uninstall any (?) unknown device, then rescan for new hardware and the Windows 7 x64 drivers will automatically install.

(3) Download and install the Canoscan Toolbox software from the Canon website.

(4) Launch the Canoscan Toolbox software, select Settings, and click the Reset button to repair the non-working Copy/Scan/PDF/Email scanner buttons.

(5) Reboot.

Button functionality is restored after the reboot. Everything works as designed now. Good luck!

For me, having a Canon P-150 and having PaperPort installed, the solution was foud here:

Maybe, this works also for other configurations, while the so-called 'Scanner connection tool' actually resolved the Twain problem with Windows8

    Hope it helps!

Have you checked the Action center. I know that with Xerox Network Scanning that first you install the driver, and then you have an Action to supply the TCP/IP address of the device.

Also with Office 2010 and 64 bit there is a MS Hot fix for TWAIN.

Same problem here too.  Except mine worked under Window 8 Pro.   I just loaded Windows 8.1 Preview through TechNet subscription (clean ISO/DVD install), and everything went smoothly except the TWAIN issue.  Exhausted and found no solution.  Brother MFC-7345N.

I'll add my 2 Canon scanners to the group that won't work with Windows 8 using the TWAIN drivers. They are the Canon CanoScan 4400F and the Canon PIXMA MP780. Bolth scanners WILL work using the WIA interface however. Did extensive troubleshooting today with Canon Tech Support. Their conclusion is that the drivers are compatible with Windows 8 and if they don't work it's a OS issue. Of course, HP and Microsoft reach the exact opposite conclusion; namely, it's a Canon driver problem.

The error message while using TWAIN state that no something.dll driver is found. However, those files exist in c:\Windows\twain_32 directories. Based on other posts, I've tried adding the appropriate path to Adobe Acrobat which I have used with TWAIN under windows 7 successfully, but no luck with that approach.
