Fixed mine. There are no Windows 8 drivers available on Canon's website or Windows Update. Follow these steps to install a Canoscan 8400F scanner under Windows 8 x64 in desktop mode:

(1) Download and install the Windows 7 x64 drivers from the Canon website.

(2) Launch Device Manager, right-click and uninstall any (?) unknown device, then rescan for new hardware and the Windows 7 x64 drivers will automatically install.

(3) Download and install the Canoscan Toolbox software from the Canon website.

(4) Launch the Canoscan Toolbox software, select Settings, and click the Reset button to repair the non-working Copy/Scan/PDF/Email scanner buttons.

(5) Reboot.

Button functionality is restored after the reboot. Everything works as designed now. Good luck!

Great one! This solution worked in a Windows 10 Home system for a CanoScan 8400F which stopped working with the same TWAIN error message for no accountable reason - probably some software or system update which modified the PATH variable. This might also work for a previously working 8400F on Win 10 with just the steps vi) to ix) but I'd already done steps i) to v) before coming across k2Burt's posting, so I've included them just to make sure!

Here's my step-by-step process for the problem:

     i) Turn 8400F scanner off and disconnect USB cable

ii) Uninstall CanoScan Toolbox  using Win 10 uninstall

iii) Uninstall CS 8400F ScanGear CS  drivers using the Canon uninstall  software <deldrvvst6424640ej.exe>

iv) Install ScanGear CS drivers using <8400fvst6410231a_64en.exe>

     v) Install CanoScan Toolbox using <cstbwin4932en.exe>

vi) Add <;C:\Windows\twain_32\CNQ8400> to the end of the PATH variable in the System Environment variables at ->System Properties->Advanced system settings->Environment Variables->System variables->Path

     vii) Restart Win 10

viii) Plug USB cable in and power on the CanoScan 8400F

ix) Run CanoScan ToolBox 4.9 and ScanGear CS was able to scan with full functionality again.

Needed to reset the CanoScan ToolBox parameters once again to point to the desired output directories and invoked programs, but all seems to be working again.

Resolved. CanoScan 9950F Twain NOW WORKS with Photoshop CS5.

    Here's what fixed it:

    1. Launch CanoScan Toolbox (I have ver: 4.9.3.2)

    2. Click CanoScan "Scan-1" Button

    3. Click "Reset" at bottom of dialog box (to reset your External Program)

    1. Click "Set" button in "External Program" to Reselect Photoshop.exe again.
    2. Congratulations! If your experience is like mine, it should now work flawlessly.
