This is obsolete

I wrote a VB Script to fix two problems while running microsoft security update KB2686509

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard LayoutandHKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layouts

for those who are no registry freaks.

*Here you can download my little hotfix as ZIP-file.*

What does it do? Nothing magic!

1. Makes a registry backup

2. delete entries in Keyboard Layout

3. checks every keyentry in Keyboard Layouts against existing file in %SystemRoot%\System32

Hope I help someone with this script.

I have written a batch file too. So you can use this instead the vbs solution.

It's a little bit harder, because the batch file exports the two keys, deletes them, creates blank entries. Then you have to run the KB2686509 again! After doing this do not reboot, press continue in the command window (restoring old entries) and then reboot.

If one of the (bad) keys does not exists, the batch file creates a blank entry, so KB2686509 should work.

The FIX-IT’s for this KB have been released today for this Security update. They are available for download at : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2686509

To perform steps 1 through 3 in the "Let me fix it myself" section, run Microsoft Fix it 50882. ( http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9812279 )

Edit on Sunday 5/13 - I figured out the problem. I had remapped a keyboard key.

Just another question - should I now delete my Faulty Keyboard log? Or I guess it doesn't matter if it's still there.

SUCCESS!!!! The update is now downloaded!

I followed the instructions for kbd files, upgraded from ME - used Notepad to delete the entries, scared to **** delete the original keyboard layouts keys, but did it, imported the edited file to the registry, and the update sucessfully installed. I saved the files in 2 different places just to be sure I could find them again, and also backed up the full registry for good measure. I've never done this before, and am so happy I bit the bullet and did it.

Thanks to you, liv, to you Susan B., and to everyone else who posted here with their solutions, problems, etc.

I upgraded from ME, also, from old Dell 8000 laptops one to the other, to another doing clones.

Anyway, I just went into each entry, and saw that the ones listed do not have the system32 in them (over to the right), and the ones not reported do have it, including the english one(s), and I just did an export of the layouts, i believe it was, by highlighting it, and doing a file export, just in case. Do a system restore point before you start, in case, also. Would not hurt to highlight the whole registry (my computer at the top), and export the whole thing in case (this just backs it up).

Guess you better make sure at least some that are listed, and hopefully the one you are using, have system32 in them, so they'll be left, but...

Then I just went looking through each one, and deleted each of them that DID NOT contain system32 in it at all. I rebooted, and voila! MS Update was happy!

I just looked, and looking at a sampling of the dozens of keyboards entries on my newer HP XP Media Center that did not have a problem with the fix at all, all of the ones I looked at have system32 in them. So, I think the older ME entries were just left in the registry, and the newer ones with system32 were created and installed by XP upgrade. ) Microsoft really at this time doesn't even know what ME did back then.) That's what it looked like. If not, you might have to find a keyboard software install, or you could do your restore, or import back the entries. Save the export of the keyboards entries, since I think that import does not delete anything, but merges, so doing an import of the file with just the keyboards entries should not be a problem if for some reason there is a problem in the future.. Sort of iffy, but I bit the bullet.

Actually, looking at other posts, looks like they just import the keyboards entries back in after the fix is happy. They are probably not used anyway, though. Don't have to worry about a service pack, or doing an upgrade in the future anyway, since you'll surely jump over Vista by doing a full 7 or 8 install!
