Okay, I have read some of the forums for similar problems. I will ask my question AND tell what I have done already, so please MS employees, don't tell me to do the same old thing that you told to others, I tried, and it still did not work.
Now using Version 2011 (Build 15.4.3555.0308) it is what I got from downloading YESTERDAY (21 NOV 2012) after uninstalling and downloading. I was using some earlier version before, but I do not have that information now. BTW, the EARLIER version (loaded in 2010) was the one that worked fine for a year or so before this problem arose.
Captions are set to automatically add.
PROBLEM: While editing, especially the simplest of edits like "SPLIT", WLMM stops working. I would love to copy and paste the message, but MS does not allow that. It goes something like this:
"Windows Live Movie Maker has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
What I have done since that message became the only response MLMM gave me for ANY editing action is:
Downloaded and installed MS Live Essentials 2011, and the problem was not solved.
Did the "repair all Windows Live" option multiple times, no visible change in the problem.
Uninstalled MS Live Essentials 2011
Reinstalled only with the products I plan to use (no messenger, no mail), no change in the problem
Increased page size of memory to 150% of installed RAM, then more (a tip from another site) AND changed the thumbnail display to large, so fewer clips show at the same time. This helped only slightly, I can do an operation or two before I got the "stopped working" message.
During one of the uninstalls, my machine ran for at least three hours, giving me a message that the uninstall was still in progress. Shut down machine, restarted, and installed MS Live Essentials 2011.
I have not touched the Codecs. I presume that any codec MSWLMM needs comes with it, and besides everything was working just a few days ago. Every program I have used for downloading and converting files is the same as I have been using for months (Real, which my WLMM does not read anyway, and Firefox extension DownloadHelper).
BTW, WLMM does not like any format that YouTube offers for downloading.
So, folks, I have already uninstalled, reinstalled and repaired. I have monkeyed with memory page sizes too. Is there some magic codec file that MS does not bother to load that I need? Please, MS employees, stick to "solutions" that I have not tried yet!

It seems that you are using Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 and eventhough your system supports this version, the video card update that is currently installed in your machine is already outdated. Just to set your expectations, the software uses heavy graphics application when it is being utilized especially during editing procedures. An outdated driver can also be the cause as to why the application would crash or not respond during editing process because the hardware itself couldn't keep up with the requirements needed by the software to run hence the reason why we keep urging you to at least have it updated to isolate the matter further. The reason why we are fervently asking you to do so is because we tested the videos and the project file you've sent and all is working fine from our end - this isolates the issue to your system/hardware specs at this point.
Here are some suggestions/options that can be done though to see if it helps out with your issue:

Contact your computer manufacturer to ask for assistance in terms of getting the latest driver version update for your video card.
If the video card could not be updated, ask if a newer version of the hardware could be replaced for your machine.
Try to use a different machine that has an updated video card driver to finish your project.
Split the movie in smaller parts, render each of these smaller parts and recombine them all together to create the final product (there have been some concerns with the application in terms of handling project files that become lengthy and large after doing heavy editing and using video source files that are big in file size).

This was WORKING FINE in OCTOBER, 2012.
You want Toshiba to update the hardware in my Satellite LAPTOP so that your program, that was working fine before, will start working again?
You keep saying that "getting the latest driver version update for your video card" which you have been saying for MONTHS, to which I have replied more than enough. So, let me rephrase THERE AIN'T NO NEW ONE! It cannot possibly be "out of date" if it is the newest one they came out with.
I already told you that I used a different machine for some video. It is pretty frustrating that you guys don't bother reading the tread. I used a Toshiba NB205, it still works fine, but it is using that Jr. version of Windows 7. The computer in question uses Vista AND IT WAS WORKING FINE IN OCTOBER.
I CANNOT SPLIT IT INTO SMALLER PARTS BECAUSE WLMM CRASHES WHEN I USE THE SPLIT FUNCTION!
THE OLDER VERSION DOES NOT WORK ANYMORE EITHER! I TOLD YOU THAT IN THE THREAD, WMM 2.6 DOES NOT WORK ON THIS MACHINE EITHER.
HOW DO I USE WHATEVER THE **** VERSIONS THAT WERE WORKING BEFORE YOU GUYS "HELPED" WITH THE UPDATE THAT BROKE WLMM?

We understand that you were able to use Movie Maker back in October 2012 but just to confirm, was it the "old version" that was working fine (the 2.6 version) or was it Windows Live Movie Maker 2011? You have submitted sample files for us to investigate and we saw that you had the old version (MWSMM file extension for the 2.6 version) as well as the new one (WLMP file extension for WLMM 2011) included in those. So just to clarify this issue further, the old project file which was created in the 2.6 version and was running under the Vista platform would eventually work fine assuming that you were using this version prior to getting the 2011 version installed. The reason we can say this is because based on the log files you have submitted, the video card driver version running on that machine was from a 2008 update and therefore can support the project file as well as the application if you were using the 2.6 version.
As for running Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 version on your Vista machine, it can be done so with no problems at all provided that the "video card driver version is up to date". As stated above, the video card driver running on your VISTA machine was from a 2008 update - 3 years even before WLMM 2011 was created. Pointing out to my previous post as well, these new Movie Maker versions (both 2011 and 2012) uses "extensive graphics rendering application" meaning it will fully utilize your video card's hardware functionality and if these are not updated appropriately then one should expect to run into problems when doing so (one of which would be crashing events as the hardware could not handle the requirements needed by Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 to run properly). This is the reason why we keep urging you to have this hardware of yours updated in order to, if not alleviate, solve the concern that you are having.
Please understand that as much as we would want to help you out further with your concern, if there would be limitations as to what your VISTA machine could do then we would be stuck in a situation where we could not diagnose further what needs to be done in order to get the problem resolved. I am wondering as well as to why your laptop does not accept new updates whereas upon checking the website of your video card's driver updates, I can see that new versions are made available for you to download and install. If you are unable to use Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 on your VISTA machine, then it would be best to use another one that works and has an updated driver version for this matter.
