Movie Maker stops working while editing

Okay, I have read some of the forums for similar problems.  I will ask my question AND tell what I have done already, so please MS employees, don't tell me to do the same old thing that you told to others, I tried, and it still did not work.

Now using Version 2011 (Build 15.4.3555.0308) it is what I got from downloading YESTERDAY (21 NOV 2012) after uninstalling and downloading.  I was using some earlier version before, but I do not have that information now.  BTW, the EARLIER version (loaded in 2010) was the one that worked fine for a year or so before this problem arose.

PROBLEM: While editing, especially the simplest of edits like "SPLIT", WLMM stops working.  I would love to copy and paste the message, but MS does not allow that.  It goes something like this:

"Windows Live Movie Maker has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.

Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

What I have done since that message became the only response MLMM gave me for ANY editing action is:

Downloaded and installed MS Live Essentials 2011, and the problem was not solved.

Did the "repair all Windows Live" option multiple times, no visible change in the problem.

Uninstalled MS Live Essentials 2011

Reinstalled only with the products I plan to use (no messenger, no mail), no change in the problem

Increased page size of memory to 150% of installed RAM, then more (a tip from another site) AND changed the thumbnail display to large, so fewer clips show at the same time. This helped only slightly, I can do an operation or two before I got the "stopped working" message.

During one of the uninstalls, my machine ran for at least three hours, giving me a message that the uninstall was still in progress.  Shut down machine, restarted, and installed MS Live Essentials 2011.

I have not touched the Codecs.  I presume that any codec MSWLMM needs comes with it, and besides everything was working just a few days ago.  Every program I have used for downloading and converting files is the same as I have been using for months (Real, which my WLMM does not read anyway, and Firefox extension DownloadHelper).

BTW, WLMM does not like any format that YouTube offers for downloading.

So, folks, I have already uninstalled, reinstalled and repaired.  I have monkeyed with memory page sizes too.  Is there some magic codec file that MS does not bother to load that I need?  Please, MS employees, stick to "solutions" that I have not tried yet!

Apologies for any misspellings, this was entered with Windows Explorer.

    Hello BudgieBird,

Please provide new log files as requested from my last post so that we could compare these new ones from the previous set you've provided to see if new updates were indeed installed. Furthermore, how big were the source files (video files) that you've used in the project file? Please check the sizes of the said video files (if more than one was used) as this will give us further information regarding the issue at hand.

You may also check how much RAM memory is used by Movie Maker during your editing and rendering processes to see if this is a factor as well. Please launch Windows Task Manager and under Processes tab, take note how much resource (RAM) the application is using during such processes.

    Thanks,

    Windows Live Global Escalations Team

This was kinda funny to read because I'm having the exact same problem and have already done all of this before getting to this thread. I was working on WMM since Jan 2013 then all of a sudden it gets super choppy about the beginning of June. Did anyone solve this problem?

No, they never solved the problem.  As you read, they blamed it on my hardware and wanted me to get a new video card, for my LAPTOP.  Then they wanted me to update video drivers that are already as updated as they go.  It is as if Steve Jobs' ghost has invaded MS.

So, here is the drill: They "update" softeware until it stops working on your machine, without any path back to what actually worked.  Then they swear their programming is fine, you just need new stuff.  Just like with my iPhone 3G that app by app stopped working because new updates will not run on the highest operating system that device will take, yet there is no way to get the old one, that was working earlier loaded back on the phone.

    Yup. Steve Jobs Ghost.

I've updated my driver which I didn't know needed updated. This didn't solve the problem either. Now I have a video in my Movie Maker right now that took me a month to edit because each time I touched an editing button it took a minute to think about it before it executed my demand. Now that it's done it won't save.  I was afraid that the Forum Moderator would send me in circles like you. And they did with no results. What a waste of time.

So, to the Forum Moderator: You're fired. Find someone who can fix it. How do we escalate this bullshit?

    Hello BudgieBird,

As per your statement, you mentioned that you are experiencing freezing and black preview screens when editing the said video - nonetheless, you are able to save it with no issues at all (just takes longer). This can be a case of outdated video card drivers that are currently installed on your laptop machine. If you said that the problem started happening early June of this year, your system may have updated your Windows Live Essentials products to the latest build/version. This would then require that your system run the latest VGA driver version for your video card in order to run properly.

Upon checking two of the log files you have provided (application and event viewer logs), we didn't find any error/s (apphang, crash, etc.) pertaining to Movie Maker that would have contributed to the problem at hand. We are currently looking at a system performance issue at this point based on your statement as these cases are commonly attributed to such scenarios. Looking as well at the DxDiag log file, we saw that the current video card driver version installed for your GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) was from way back 2009. It is recommended that you install the latest one for your machine in order to eliminate these performance issues.

Here is a link for the**Intel Driver Update Utility tool** which will help you in terms of downloading the latest update/s made available for your hardware. Just to set your expectations though, if the tool was able to direct you to a download page remember that these are generic updates used for most machines. If you would be getting a warning message telling you that these are not compatible with your laptop, that only means that your OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) has imposed proprietary restrictions which would prevent your machine from doing so. Best to consult their support team for this matter so that you could be guided accordingly.

If you were able to update the video card driver to the latest version and the issue is still persistent, please send us updated DxDiag and MsInfo log files for this matter.

    Thanks,

    Windows Live Global Escalations Team

Here is a recent edit: http://youtu.be/dde0lElGeAU

I am able to save the edit without the glitches and choppiness. It just takes me 10 times longer because it freezes and moves to black screens.  The trim tool doesn't work right away. It takes 10 seconds to scroll manually through the video. You have to wait for it to figure out where it is, then when you scroll you have to wait for it to come with you. It's like working blind.

In this video, playing the edit runs fine with the JPEG until it gets to the AVCHD Video (.MTS).  That is where it gets choppy and finally goes to black screen while the music still plays.

I couldn't tell you what automatic updates that Microsoft does to my computer and when.

The computer is an Asus Notebook. That information was in the logs that I sent you.

I think it may be worth it to pay $20-40 on new software rather than do support like this. I can see this happens to many others. What have YOU learned? I don't see anyone with this problem solved?
