Movie Maker stops working while editing

Okay, I have read some of the forums for similar problems. I will ask my question AND tell what I have done already, so please MS employees, don't tell me to do the same old thing that you told to others, I tried, and it still did not work.

Now using Version 2011 (Build 15.4.3555.0308) it is what I got from downloading YESTERDAY (21 NOV 2012) after uninstalling and downloading. I was using some earlier version before, but I do not have that information now. BTW, the EARLIER version (loaded in 2010) was the one that worked fine for a year or so before this problem arose.

Captions are set to automatically add.

PROBLEM: While editing, especially the simplest of edits like "SPLIT", WLMM stops working. I would love to copy and paste the message, but MS does not allow that. It goes something like this:

"Windows Live Movie Maker has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.

Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

What I have done since that message became the only response MLMM gave me for ANY editing action is:

Downloaded and installed MS Live Essentials 2011, and the problem was not solved.

Did the "repair all Windows Live" option multiple times, no visible change in the problem.

Uninstalled MS Live Essentials 2011

Reinstalled only with the products I plan to use (no messenger, no mail), no change in the problem

Increased page size of memory to 150% of installed RAM, then more (a tip from another site) AND changed the thumbnail display to large, so fewer clips show at the same time. This helped only slightly, I can do an operation or two before I got the "stopped working" message.

During one of the uninstalls, my machine ran for at least three hours, giving me a message that the uninstall was still in progress. Shut down machine, restarted, and installed MS Live Essentials 2011.

I have not touched the Codecs. I presume that any codec MSWLMM needs comes with it, and besides everything was working just a few days ago. Every program I have used for downloading and converting files is the same as I have been using for months (Real, which my WLMM does not read anyway, and Firefox extension DownloadHelper).

BTW, WLMM does not like any format that YouTube offers for downloading.

So, folks, I have already uninstalled, reinstalled and repaired. I have monkeyed with memory page sizes too. Is there some magic codec file that MS does not bother to load that I need? Please, MS employees, stick to "solutions" that I have not tried yet!

Hi,

To further investigate this issue, I've opened a private message in this thread where you can upload log files. The instructions on how to gather the log files were also provided in the private message. Make sure that you are currently signed in to view the private message and reply on this post to notify us that the required files have been provided.

But before you gather the log files, please install the latest version of Windows Movie Maker from the link below then reproduce the issue. After that, collect the log files so the problem will reflect on it.

I spoke too soon on MM2.6. It will save a project, but will not render a movie. Also, in Task Manager it shows an instance of MOVIEMK.exe long after closing the program.

It seems to lose its place on what video it is supposed to be editing, then gives a puzzling set of problems like making sure the storage location is available. I have 273G of free space and even made a new folder for the video, both in the same folder as the source, another in the same folder as the project, then yet another with nothing else in it.

BTW, I have used Windows-KB890830-V4.14 several times over the past 2 days to makes sure my machine is clean. It does not catch as many things as Spyware doctor, so I used that too.

Thank you for providing us the troubleshooting steps that you've made to fix the issue. It's possible that your operating system requires a couple of a few updates. To avoid these errors kindly do the following:

For updating purposes, please download and install **Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5**.

Update your video card to its latest version (please check your video card website for updates)

Make sure that your Windows is up to date by going to this link.

Let us know the results afterwards.

Spent the mornign doing that. Using a Toshiba laptop and video driver is up to date. Windows installed 2 updaes for .NET Framework 4.5. I shut down and started the machine after each step (not restart, did full shutdown and start).

No change. Live Movie Maker still behaves like it did yesterday, it closes when I try any edit function. Movie Maker 2.6 is somewhat usable, but it does not show thumbnail images in te Clip Collection.

Now, here is the rub, Windows Live Movie Maker AND Movie Maker 2.6 were working as fine as they ever did FOUR DAYS AGO, and suddenly they stopped working. Please, spare me the nonsense that they might interfear with each othr too. They didn't for about two years. If WLMM had the same features as MM2.6 I would not need both anyway.

How on earth is installing any new stuff going to get these programs working as well as they did one week, one month, or one year ago?

Has ANYBODY looked at the latest round of Windows "updates" to see what was going on there? It would be super-duper nice to have my computer running like it did just four days ago without loading my machine up with more software?

Sounds more like something needs to be undone rather than redone.

Additionally, Windows says it has gathered and transmitted information about the problem MANY TIMES, each time it happened as a matter of fact. So, please, don't ask me to provide the information that you already have, like that does any good anyway.
