My current username in Windows 8 is Danny.  The directory of my user folder is C:\Users\danch_000 .  This is annoying and driving me crazy.  I should also tell you this user is tied to my Microsoft Account.  On my Microsoft Account my Name is Danny.  How can I change the name of the folder without messing anything up in he registry or any other part of the computer.

Ok dude... this is a hassle but it does work.

Summary:

You need to log in on a local admin account (create one if it does not exist already), delete your user account (Danny) and then rename the danch_000 folder to danny.old (I do this only so that you do not lose any data you may have already saved here. it is just a backup folder now)

then Create a new LOCAL user called Danny. Log into this user account and all the files will be under C:\Users\Danny.

Now you must go to pc settings and choose switch to Microsoft account.

Once the process is finished, you are using a Microsoft Live account, with the 'User' Displayed as your full name, but all the files are in a directory named 'Danny'

If this is too summarized for you and you need detailed instructions just post here and tell me, I am in the process of creating a guide for just this issue for my coworkers

can use netplwiz command in search to change user account names ....on the surface as well as the normal user interface......but to change the name locally on a local account use regedit and follow this path:  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList  then find the path in the registry under  one of the s-1-5.....it's in there they're all in there.....will have to change the name using another account when the account u want to change is not logged in.....restart when finished and voila!    also do not attempt this with a microsoft account until changing it TEMPORARILY to a local account...also if you change it only in regedit and not directly in file explorer with another account it will create a new local account and lose your settings....have no fear:  log out the ruined new account and change back to unwanted name in file explorer and start all over after deleting the other temporary user account folder......1. change to local account...2. change desired name in other user account(easier in admin account...admin priv required) 3. change in regedit in windows nt folder in hkeylocalmachinesoftwaremicrosoftwindowsntcurrentvers...profilelist4. logout---restart 4. log back in changed account.  5. done get sticker smiley face.

There is nothing to be fixed. Please see a very easy to follow method to have your user folder named what you want it to be named on page one of this thread.

I really am flabbergasted to discover people are still talking about 'fixes' or 'tools' needed.

"Microsoft is aware of the issue and will bring a fix"...... what on earth do you mean? a fix for what? There is no bug to fix.

There is no reason for anyone to care what the underlying folder is called, and if they do there is an easy way to make it called what they want it to be called.

You are correct however in your assertion that no one should do what Yashila suggests.

On the contrary, it seems its the users that are getting dumber. The solution is pretty easy, if you really want to determine the exact name of the folder used to store your data. I do, but it is unneccessary - if the folder is named 'sdfgsdf345asdgs14' it would make no noticable difference to any use cases.
