Hi all,
I recently used the error checking tool on my internal hard drive on my laptop. It found errors and told me to reboot. Now everytime I boot my pc a message in the action center pops up saying "Restart to repair drive errors", and no matter how many times I try, it still tells me there are drive errors.
I can't seem to find any more details on the exact errors. I run Windows 8 Pro. Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction?
EDIT: Running Chkdsk from the command promt returns a similar error, albeit a little more wordy: "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume [the C: drive, the one that has errors -RF] in in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?" Replying <y> and rebooting, gives the same errors: the action center still tells me to reboot, and Chkdsk returns the same message as before.
I also tried running sfc, just for good measure. The log created (CBS.log) shows several errors at the bottom, seemingly all pertaining to autochk.exe, in some way or another.
I wonder if this may have been caused by running drive optimization and stopping prematurely (in order to reboot for the error checking utility).

Yes, uninstalling AdAware solves this!
Finally after days seeking for a fix. I accidentally fixed this by uninstalling a few unnecessary programs from my laptop. One of those is AdAware. Finally I've just found that error checking during boot is gone. No more that awkward restart message from action center.

after leaving my laptop for a while, it does an auto deflag and show up that restart message again oh damn
I did a check on a USB drive and I uninstalled all instances of Ad-Aware.
Touch wood the problem seems gone for me too. Thanks everyone.

Did you use a third party uninstaller to remove AdAware? Like IObit uninstaller - letting it do a find the last bit (I forget the term used) removal. Then do a registry clean up to get rid of every last trace of AdAware. This program has caused me all sorts of problems - it stopped me accessing simple web sites, it deleted mail (including one sent by Lavasoft!!) - I'm not a great fan.
I have never had a problem with AdAware until now but this takes me back to the Norton Disk Doctor who should have been sued for malpractice - I uninstalled AdAware and the problem persisted for a couple days and then it just ceased - and has not recurred despite several reboots. My laptop is now booting as quickly as it did when new - so AdAware must have been partially at fault.
Of course now every time I wake up the laptop from sleep I get a bogus message that "computer had unknown error and had to be rebooted" and asks me if I want to send a report to MS - since it is just as quick to click yes as no, I send the report.
I installed IObit - the registry cleaner is NOT free - you have to pay for the upgrade for that, so I was sort of put off by the person that posted that there was a free version when their post was misleading... you need to be more honest in your posts. However, it looks like the free stuff included in IObit is useful so I left it installed for the time being.
I don't know if the original poster found a solution, but I know hundreds if not thousands of people are having the same problem with this ridiculous and vague "important: reboot to repair drive errors" message that does not even specify which drive is believed to be having a problem, and which does not work as a solution. It just keeps re-appearing.
I happened upon a short thread in the Lavasoft ad-aware forum. The poster was also having the same problem, but upon deleting his current version of ad-aware, the error message vanished. I, and several others have all tried the same thing: remove adaware using the remove programs option (just make sure you still have some sort of anti-virus and pop-up blocker installed.
Every one of us who removed ad-aware had the "reboot to repair drive error" message go away. I realize that when this thread was originally created, adaware free 11 was not released, but something in earlier versions could still be conflicting with a Microsoft update. This is a possible three minute procedure to remove a program and reboot your computer, and may save countless hours of searching the internet, clean installs, and possibly purchasing a new harddrive, all because of a glitch between Microsoft Windows and Lavasoft Adaware.
If you have this error and you have adaware installed, try uninstalling adaware. If you are still stuck with the error after uninstalling and rebooting, then just reinstall adaware. If the error does go away then post back on this forum and tell Microsoft and Lavasoft to get their act together and figure out what the bug is, otherwise it will never get fixed. And please, Microsoft, make your error messages include useful information like, oh I don't know, which drive has a suspected error!!!
