Hi all,
I recently used the error checking tool on my internal hard drive on my laptop. It found errors and told me to reboot. Now everytime I boot my pc a message in the action center pops up saying "Restart to repair drive errors", and no matter how many times I try, it still tells me there are drive errors.
I can't seem to find any more details on the exact errors. I run Windows 8 Pro. Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction?
EDIT: Running Chkdsk from the command promt returns a similar error, albeit a little more wordy: "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume [the C: drive, the one that has errors -RF] in in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?" Replying <y> and rebooting, gives the same errors: the action center still tells me to reboot, and Chkdsk returns the same message as before.
I also tried running sfc, just for good measure. The log created (CBS.log) shows several errors at the bottom, seemingly all pertaining to autochk.exe, in some way or another.
I wonder if this may have been caused by running drive optimization and stopping prematurely (in order to reboot for the error checking utility).

I was able to remove AdAware just using the normal add remove programs feature. This has also been a problem on my son's Windows 8.1 Dell laptop and removing AdAware on it fixed it also. Again I don't know what kind of conflict is occurring but it is obvious something is wrong.
You could well be right about AdAware causing the problem - I am presently running AdAware 11 and I have the same drive status warning (now disabled as no problem found using chkdsk /spotfix).
I was hoping that this would be the easy solution - but it was not. I uninstalled AdAware, problem persists.
Worse - when I upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1, the false error doubled - now I get TWO of them and have to wait EVERY TIME while booting for the laptop to perform the check. The problem went from sporadic to constant.
The easy thing would have been if Microsoft was not stingy in providing DVDs with the purchase of the OS instead of this BS they do with Dell and other manufacturers...
Did you use a third party uninstaller to remove AdAware? Like IObit uninstaller - letting it do a find the last bit (I forget the term used) removal. Then do a registry clean up to get rid of every last trace of AdAware. This program has caused me all sorts of problems - it stopped me accessing simple web sites, it deleted mail (including one sent by Lavasoft!!) - I'm not a great fan.

The disk drive error is a constant warning on my PC at the moment - and I believe that it's software related - either Windows upgrades or AdAware 11.
I have regularly run CHKDSK and it finds no problems - to get rid of the annoying Action Center message - go into Action Center and turn off the drive status message!
To avoid the CHKDSK seeming to stall on 17% I suggest that you run it with the following command chkdsk /spotfix. CHKDSK is always running in the background and the spotfix command will only address any problems found by the background runs. It also has the advantage of showing a progress %age as it runs following a reboot.
I've been running AdAware since my Dell Tablet was new and had no problems, but at some point, I am assuming after an update I ran into the drive error problem. I had run check disk and let action center "fix" the problem several times with no success. I read the above post and gave uninstalling AdAware a try and voila, no hard disk problem. So in my case it must have been some conflict between Lavasoft AdAware and an update from Microsoft. I will now have to try another antivirus and see if I have the same problem.
I have tried all of the other recommendations to no avail - and unfortunately this response does not work for me nor will it work for hundreds of thousands of Microsoft customers that have Dells and the ilk, as Microsoft has opted to no longer provide install DVDs with new computers.
It is frustrating, as my Dell Inspiron with Intel Core i3 running Windows 8.1, now displays two of these fake drive errors and insists on performing two disk checks prior to starting almost every time I "wake" the laptop. This can be several times a day and has caused the boot up time to expand from mere seconds to several minutes.
