"Restart to repair drive errors" keep showing up after reboot

Hi all,

I recently used the error checking tool on my internal hard drive on my laptop. It found errors and told me to reboot. Now everytime I boot my pc a message in the action center pops up saying "Restart to repair drive errors", and no matter how many times I try, it still tells me there are drive errors.

I can't seem to find any more details on the exact errors. I run Windows 8 Pro. Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction?

EDIT: Running Chkdsk from the command promt returns a similar error, albeit a little more wordy: "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume [the C: drive, the one that has errors -RF] in in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?" Replying <y> and rebooting, gives the same errors: the action center still tells me to reboot, and Chkdsk returns the same message as before.

I also tried running sfc, just for good measure. The log created (CBS.log) shows several errors at the bottom, seemingly all pertaining to autochk.exe, in some way or another.

I wonder if this may have been caused by running drive optimization and stopping prematurely (in order to reboot for the error checking utility).

I run Quicken 2004 on my laptop and I don't think that is the problem - I have been using it since 2004!! I'm pretty sure Quicken is not the problem.

Thanks for the pointer that AdAware may not be the issue - and more likely Windows updates - which have a checkered history - I'm still having a problem with Windows Live Mail (WLM) update from WLM 2011 to WLM 2012

Good to hear that the "restart" message has not appeared - lucky you!

However, let me repeat my recommendation that contributors use the chkdsk /spotfix command to be applied at next reboot. This avoids the interminable wait for the normal chkdsk process

I don't run Ad-Aware - on either of my machines.

Chkdsk did finish when I checked about 5 hours later - can't say how long it took. So far, the "Restart" msg has not appeared on my PC (45 min now).

No recent new software installs - only Windows updates (and JAVA and Adobe)

I am running an old (2001) version of Quicken. After the last Windows update, there was an image problem with one of the files. Windows recommended re-install of the software; this worked and the image error was removed. I do not run Quicken on my laptop and still get the "Restart" error. Chkdsk ran differently than on my PC; I was able to run it using the bootable CD in real time. My PC ran it after windows said it would start on the next re-boot.

Will disable the "Action Centre Messages" on my laptop.

You could well be right about AdAware causing the problem - I am presently running AdAware 11 and I have the same drive status warning (now disabled as no problem found using chkdsk /spotfix). AdAware also has another problem with Windows 8.1 - since updating to 8.1, I can only get Real Time Protection to activate on AdAware - the other functions are greyed out! AdAware is aware of this issue and is developing an upgrade (or so I'm told by Lavasoft)

The disk drive error is a constant warning on my PC at the moment - and I believe that it's software related - either Windows upgrades or AdAware 11.

I have regularly run CHKDSK and it finds no problems - to get rid of the annoying Action Center message - go into Action Center and turn off the drive status message!

To avoid the CHKDSK seeming to stall on 17% I suggest that you run it with the following command chkdsk /spotfix. CHKDSK is always running in the background and the spotfix command will only address any problems found by the background runs. It also has the advantage of showing a progress %age as it runs following a reboot.

I believe it is some software that is causing this issue. If you remember when you started to see this issue and can think of the softwares that you installed at that time, try to uninstall them and see.. For me, the antivirus program "Ad-aware" was the issue.. I removed the program a week ago and I have not seen that notification after that.
