"Restart to repair drive errors" keep showing up after reboot

Hi all,

I recently used the error checking tool on my internal hard drive on my laptop. It found errors and told me to reboot. Now everytime I boot my pc a message in the action center pops up saying "Restart to repair drive errors", and no matter how many times I try, it still tells me there are drive errors.

I can't seem to find any more details on the exact errors. I run Windows 8 Pro. Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction?

EDIT: Running Chkdsk from the command promt returns a similar error, albeit a little more wordy: "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume [the C: drive, the one that has errors -RF] in in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?" Replying <y> and rebooting, gives the same errors: the action center still tells me to reboot, and Chkdsk returns the same message as before.

I also tried running sfc, just for good measure. The log created (CBS.log) shows several errors at the bottom, seemingly all pertaining to autochk.exe, in some way or another.

I wonder if this may have been caused by running drive optimization and stopping prematurely (in order to reboot for the error checking utility).

    If you scan the drive from File Explorer - Properties - Tools Tab - Scan For Errors, after it finishes it will show a windows with the option to SEE DETAILS, or something to that effect. Click on that see details button, and you should get lots more information than you can process.

    As for freeware versions of disk scanners, I can only suggest you Google freeware hard drive test utilities, and see what comes up. I stick to Western Digital drives which has its own testing utilities, but aren't great. I'm sure something will show up under a Google search.

    Sorry I don't know what else to suggest. Again, scan the drive from File Explorer instead of rebooting, and then look for the button that says SHOW DETAILS after the scan is complete. There is a bunch there.

    Error checking runs....completed Laptop loads to Windows....nothing like a report, or, something that reads no errors found.

    I Had McAfee Live, Uninstalled it thinking it was causing the issue.  Deleting McAfee did speed up the PC...I have always felt McAfee slows PC's down...it came Free for 1 yr...so no Loss.  When you delete Security software Defender automatically takes over....so that is what is currently my active anti-Virus.  

    No conflicts shown is Device Manager for any item.   

    Is there a utility that is free, but is rated highly that could scan the Hard Drive, diagnosis the health of the HDD, display a Report to show it ran all tests passed/No Errors found...as well as, if it found errors the report would display showing you what it found.  Again a utility for the simple minded me....that will be as easy as Downloading, Installing and running without having to go thru configuring it, etc.

    Taking it to a Independent shop, I have unfortunately heard too many horror stories...which in my case I would just toss the Laptop aside.

    This Laptop has been re-imaged 2 times with a new Factory image for this Model...keyed right to its serial Number that Toshiba sent me on a USB Drive.  Nothing is added following the Factory restore.....

    Simply put, when you run the scan on your drive, does it say you have any errors? If you haven't run a scan from Windows 10, simply open File Explorer, right click the drive and select properties. Then click on the Tools menu and select check for errors. It will run for a while and tell you if there is a problem with the drive. That's it.

    If the result shows no errors on the drive, it is likely a software glitch. As I stated, your anti-virus is the most likely culprit if that is the case since Windows aggressively tries to default to using the Windows Defender anti-virus. Is Windows Defender the anti-virus program you are using, or do you have another installed? More than one running at the same time can cause a conflict.

    You might also try checking under Device Manager to see if there are any warning symbols indicating a problem with a device driver. Just right click the Windows icon on the lower left hand side of the screen and select Device Manager. Then look for warning symbols beside the devices in your system. Pretty straight forward. Hopefully pointless, but maybe a device driver needs to be updated.

    If you did need to actually take your computer somewhere to be checked out, don't send it to Toshiba or take it to Staples or Best Buy. Go to a dedicated computer repair shop if there is one nearby. It should be much cheaper.

    Wish I was up to this, it is above my "PC" working knowledge to follow thru as you have directed.....
