Windows XP Computer Overall Slow, Freezing & Locking Up.

My Mom's Windows XP Computer is overall slow, freezing & locking up mostly all the time. I don't have the money right now to pay for Premium Support through Microsoft to get it fixed. Can anybody please help me get this issue resolved immediately! It's been like this for a while. I just want my mom's computer to run normally like any other computer would. Please! Let me know. I appreciate it. Thanks.

    I'm confused of what to do with the video thing? It just comes up with Notepad. A text document. Please help me with that. The top seven processes are as follows: System Idle Process, firefox.exe, svchost.exe, taskmgr.exe, alg.exe, Updates from HP, hpqtra08.exe. What do you mean by values? CPU? Memory Usage: firefox.exe, the numbers keep going up. I can't give you a specific number. Maybe because I am using it now? MsMpEng.exe, 35,996 K, explorer.exe, 17,848 K, svchost.exe, 12,064 K, taskmgr.exe, 5,724 K, msseces,exe, 4,040 K, hpqtra08.exe, 3,664 K.

    Some of these keep going up or down. The numbers. I can't give you a specific number.

    that's normal, what he wants are the numbers from the performance tab of task manager.

    Open Task Manager, select the performance tab, look in the lower left corner, and give Daavee, the Commit Charge numbers for Total, limit, and Peak.

    Can you do that?

    I suppose I should not have said to "note" the three values. Please write them down and include them in your next post.

    I will do it now so you get an idea of what I'm looking for.

    These are the three values under Commit Charge (yes they do change; that is not a big deal; pick ANY number since they do not change radically):

    Total 568952

    Limit 4033908

    Peak 780176

    Under Physical Memory:

    Total 2095532

    (Available and System Cache are not  necessary.

    The figures you gave me above were Mem Usage. That is good. Do the same for CPU (they will be percentages). Here are my top three right now:

    System Idle Process 98 (this is good; you want this number to be high!)
