Runtime error for atibtmon.exe when disconnecting AC power cord

Everytime I disconnect my AC power cord Windows 8 shows a Erro Dialog:

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\WINDOWS\system32\atibtmon.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Anyone having the same problem?

Any hotfix for this?

Vari bright option:

Power -> Power Play -> uncheck Enable Vari-Bright

Unchecking the "Vari Bright" option in the ATI Catalyst Control Center resolved the issue for me as well. It seems this option dims the brightness of the display when unplugged; however, I believe Windows also does this (or, at least it does on my Dell XPS 16). Perhaps two programs attempting to essentially do the same thing are the cause of the atibtmon issue?

I encountered this problem with my Pavilion DV6 after upgrading to W8 64bit as well and it's more irritating than it ought to be. For what it's worth though, I opened the AMD Vision Engine Control Center and disabled the "Vari Bright" option under the Power tab and that seemed to fix getting the error message every time my laptop is unplugged. Doesn't fix the underlying problem and will will decrease my unplugged-time a bit, but I can live with that.

Thanks for the legwork though, Amiarage. Looks like we;ll need to content ourselves with waiting for ATI to fix it.

Hello guys , this problem was solved a long time ago . I will check it out and get back to you with the exact date .

Yes.....go to page 4 to the bottom post with my name on it. I found the fix on another Forum and it worked for me and a few others. In fact, I will doublecheck that it stuck.

Annie has a chart on page 5 which shows you what to do.

I was having the same error - plus I found once I disconnected the power cord the links within many applications were affected. For example: I could open and access my Online Banking accounts but once it was opened it seemed that my pointer (mouse) was not working properly and I could not access linked processes within the application - as in I could not access transaction history and could not sign-off ... had to just close the web browser and sign-off ... plug in my power cord and everyone was happy again. Such a PAIN!!

I downloaded and ran Driver Update (Slimware Holdings).

I also went into Power Options >Change Plan Settings>Advanced Options>ATI Graphics>Battery and changed it to Maximize Performance (on Battery) so it doesn't dim the screen (??) I think that is what fixed the Runtime Error more than the Driver Update (??). Of course my On Battery life is very short now but its the lesser of the problems for my use.

I'm not a certified techie, so it's all trial and error ... mostly error! :) But this did work - no more error ... :)
